The application of a newly developed instrument for the assessment of patient function in rehabilitation is discussed. The 18-item Functional Independence Measure (FIM) was used to rate 187 patients requiring inpatient rehabilitation. This study determined that the number of individuals with mental retardation in an unselected group of 13-year-old Swedes (n=7987) was 116. Comparison of subjects with peers showed that subjects were low achieving and had poor self-evaluations, but these characteristics were shared by some pupils in the general population. (Author/JDD)
