The difference in work patterns and practice characteristics of male and female physicians are examined. The results indicate that female physicians are less likely to work in traditional practice settings, work fewer hours per week, are reimbursed at a lower annual level, and have a slightly different composition of patients. Expanding welfare benefits to include two-parent families has long been considered an option for a public policy designed to strengthen family units.
