When the Subject Becomes the Other: Close Writing for Non-Subsumptive Understanding and Narrative Agency

This article uses excerpts from poetry, memoir and epistolary genres emerging from research that has utilized close writing practices to interpret the interplay among memory, narrative, and agency. Biographical, historical, archival, and interpretive processes are used to reveal deferred, not noticed, and/or not counted experiences of those depicted in the writings. A model of non-subsumptive memory and narrative empathy is applied as a way to consider how close writing can influence the creation of new cultural memorial forms that support experiences of narrative agency. Comments on interpretive processes used and possible impacts of the research are provided throughout the text.
