This inquiry had two aims: to assess children's ability to interpret maps in geography; to relate the assessed ability to maturity of thought as proposed by Peel, general intelligence, and age. Used a coding system for chronicling a variety of microbehaviors in sequence in adolescent job environments. Working teenagers (N=97) were observed continuously over a two-hour period. The relationships among self-concept, classroom interaction, and academic achievement were investigated in this study of preadolescent elementary school students. Results indicate that the low self-concept students showed more social withdrawal, academic difficulties, and inappropriate attention than did students with high self-concepts. (JN)
