A survey of two state university medical schools' family practice graduates examined the extent of their moonlighting during residency and its perceived effects on their training, personal or family life, and finances. Most felt the employment was beneficial to their training or finances and had little negative impact. (MSE)

Four areas in which a resident felt least prepared by medical school are outlined: teaching medical students; working as an effective ambulatory care doctor; discussing the psycho-social issues that surround terminal illness, death, and dying; and functioning as a cost-conscious health care provider. Medical school faculty, graduates, and residents in nine family practice residency programs in Iowa identified 29 office and outpatient procedures that residents should be able to perform, as well as 11 elective procedures. Female dental students in 68 American and Canadian dental schools were surveyed regarding women in dental school. It was found that almost 80 percent do not believe their sex hinders them, that qualifications should be the primary consideration in admission and hiring, and that special seminars would be a beneficial support service. Behaviorally disturbed children are treated through the Pediatric/Adolescent Primary Care Unit at Rhode Island Hospital in a program designed to combine the care of children with behavior problems and the training of pediatric residents.
