Peer reviewedWebb, Melvin W., II – Journal of Reading, 1983
Uses a scale to analyze three tests used for assessing community college students' reading levels: The Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test (SDRT), the Nelson-Denny Reading Test (NDRT), and the Iowa Silent Reading Tests (ISRT). Judges the ISRT to be the best and the NDRT to be unacceptable according to the criteria of the scale. (FL)

Peer reviewedGross, Leon J. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1982
Addressing Glass' argument (EJ 198 842) that a lack of interrelater reliability is an inherent deficiency in the Nedelsky technique, poor rater training and the need for a group decision procedure are presented as standard setting problems. (CM)
Descriptors: Academic Standards, Criterion Referenced Tests, Cutting Scores, Evaluation Criteria
Peer reviewedSmith, Philip L.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
An observation instrument designed to be applicable across teaching situations (both grade levels and educational strategies) is presented with evidence regarding its efficiency and generalizability. The dependability of scores yielded is assessed by a generalizability study, and recommendations concerning number and item types in the measure are…
Descriptors: Classroom Observation Techniques, Elementary Secondary Education, Measurement Techniques, Student Behavior
Peer reviewedAlbanese, Mark A. – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1982
Findings regarding formats and scoring formulas for multiple-choice test items with more than one correct response are presented. Strong cluing effects in the Type K format, increasing the correct score percentage and reducing test reliability, recommend using the Type X format. Alternative scoring methods are discussed. (Author/CM)
Descriptors: Health Occupations, Multiple Choice Tests, Professional Education, Response Style (Tests)
Peer reviewedGross, Leon J. – Journal of Optometric Education, 1982
A critique of a variety of formats used in combined-response test items (those in which the respondent must choose the correct combination of options: a and b, all of the above, etc.) illustrates why this kind of testing is inherently flawed and should not be used in optometry examinations. (MSE)

Categorization Agreement of the Personality Attributes Questionnaire and the Bem Sex Role Inventory.
Peer reviewedGaa, John P.; Liberman, Dov – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1981
Investigated the extent to which the Personality Attributes Questionnaire and the Bem Sex Role Inventory assigned the same individuals to identical sex-role categories. Less than 55 percent of the subjects were assigned to identical categories. Suggests care must be taken when comparing results of studies that employ different instruments. (Author)

Peer reviewedUmansky, Warren; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1981
Examined the test-retest reliability of the McCarthy Screening Test (MST) with five- and six-year-olds tested early in the school year. Those "at risk" on the first test were retested. Results suggest the MST is not stable enough to be used alone to identify children with potential learning problems. (Author)
Descriptors: Diagnostic Tests, Educational Diagnosis, Elementary Education, Followup Studies
Peer reviewedBlackburn, Richard S. – Journal of Management, 1981
Investigates the psychometric adequacy of Steers and Braunstein's (1976) Manifest Needs Questionnaire. Research results indicate that the instrument possesses adequate stability but lacks adequate internal consistency. Factor analytic procedures fail to replicate the a priori factor structure. Results are compared with Steers and Braunstein's…

Peer reviewedAdelson, R.; And Others – Gerontologist, 1982
Reports the reliability and validity of the Health Professional-Geriatric Patient Interaction Behavior Rating Code, an observational instrument that is used to quantify the interpersonal behaviors of health professionals in the care of the geriatric patient. Condensed 15 behavioral factors into 10 operationally defined behavioral categories.…
Descriptors: Attitudes, Behavior Patterns, Behavior Rating Scales, Health Personnel
Peer reviewedChermak, Gail D.; O'Connell, Vickie I. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
Twenty normal children were administered three tests of auditory sequential memory. A Pearson product-moment correlation of .50 and coefficients of determination showed all but one relationship to be nonsignificant and predictability between pairs of scores to be poor. (Author)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Children, Comparative Testing, Correlation
Peer reviewedJemail, Jay A.; LoPiccolo, Joseph – American Journal of Family Therapy, 1982
Developed scale for each sex to measure defensiveness about the marital relationship and to measure defensiveness about the sexual relationship of couples. Presents evidence to support that these content specific scales surpass a global defensiveness scale as a measure of defensiveness regarding couples' sexual or marital relationship. (Author)
Descriptors: Interpersonal Relationship, Marriage, Measures (Individuals), Psychological Patterns
Peer reviewedGolden, Morrie – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1981
Described the development and evaluation of a measure of cognitive belief systems and thinking styles. Reliability and validity results were poor for junior college students. For university and nonstudent populations, cognition scores discriminated social anxiety. The Cognition Scale of Assertiveness is a reliable and valid measure of cognitive…

Peer reviewedSuddick, David E.; Bowen, Charles L. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
A 2.5-year longitudinal study of the reading scales of the Stanford Achievement Test confirmed the redundancy in its subtests. Strong and stable test-retest reliability coefficients were evident and supported the use of the Stanford total reading scale for longitudinal evaluations. (Author)
Descriptors: Intermediate Grades, Junior High Schools, Longitudinal Studies, Psychometrics
Zeitlin, Shirley – Exceptional Child, 1982
The article describes the Coping Inventory, an observation instrument used to assess 48 coping behaviors and to develop a profile which generates goals and objectives in a preschool learning handicapped child's individualized education plan aimed at increasing coping competence. (Author/SB)

Learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, and unclassified male students tested when 6 to 11 years of age with the Elizur Test of Psycho-Organicity were reassessed four years later. The test-retest reliability, subtest reliabilities, and pattern of subtest intercorrelations were found to be stable, but individual subtest scores should be used with…
