Jane Austen's House/Her Brother' House
Lizzie Dunford1
Studies in the Education of Adults, v57 n2 p305-311 2025
This article discusses the considerable work has been carried out over the past few years at the Jane Austen's House museum with the aim of centering the visitor experience on Austen herself, and her writing. This might sound very obvious, and exactly what it should always have been, however, to walk through the House before this work took place, was to walk through a building which, despite having her name quite literally over the door, could be oddly devoid of her presence, and of the other women who lived with her there. Despite being the home of one of the country's most famous literary daughters, Austen was often strangely absent from her home with instead a hazy focus on her wider family, her brothers and their descendants. This was, in part, driven by a justifiable desire to ensure that the objects displayed with the museum were as 'authentic' as possible. The article discusses how Austen's brothers remain very important to her story, but the museum has shifted them from pole position, and re-contextualised them within her life and her career. The museum now celebrates their support of Austen, and what that enabled her to achieve, and how their lives were key influences over the great works of art written in this house.
