Peer reviewedCrane, Beverley; Markowitz, Nancy Lourie – Reference Librarian, 1994
Presents a model that uses online searching to teach critical thinking skills in elementary and secondary education based on Bloom's taxonomy. Three levels of activity are described: analyzing a search statement; defining and clarifying a problem; and focusing an information need. (Contains 13 references.) (LRW)
Descriptors: Critical Thinking, Elementary Secondary Education, Information Needs, Learning Activities
Peer reviewedMandel, David R.; And Others – Child Abuse & Neglect: The International Journal, 1994
This study examined whether numbers of unwarranted assumptions, hypotheses, and requests for additional information concerning a hypothetical case of child abuse and neglect (CAN) predicted agreement with a premature decision to remove a child from home among 141 CAN professionals. Comparison with undergraduates found that more CAN professionals…
Descriptors: Case Studies, Child Abuse, Child Neglect, Child Welfare
Wiburg, Karin; Carter, Bruce – Computing Teacher, 1994
Examines research on computers as cognitive enhancers, focusing on applications software that includes spreadsheets, graphing, and databases. Appropriate computer-based problem-solving environments for young children are reviewed, and implications for teachers are suggested. (Contains eight references.) (LRW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics, Computer Software
Peer reviewedBorasi, Raffaella – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1994
Reports a case study exploring how 2 16-year olds were enabled to capitalize on the potential of errors to stimulate and support mathematical inquiry. Discusses variations within the strategy of using errors to enhance mathematics instruction. Appendix includes list of instructional episodes and error activities. (Contains 56 references.) (MKR)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Error Patterns, Experiential Learning, High School Students
Peer reviewedNathanson, Stephen – Journal of Legal Education, 1994
A law professor explains how he came to view legal problem solving as the driving concept in law school curriculum design and draws on personal experience and a survey of students concerning teaching methods in a commercial law course. He outlines six curriculum design principles for teaching legal problem solving. (MSE)
Descriptors: Business Administration Education, Curriculum Design, Higher Education, Legal Education (Professions)
Peer reviewedRandhawa, Bikkar S. – Alberta Journal of Educational Research, 1994
Examined differences in cognitive and metacognitive processes of 40 high- and low-mathematics-ability students in grade 12 as they solved 5 everyday mathematics problems. Competence in problem solving was characterized by a rich knowledge base, metacognitive strategies, and confidence. Boys and girls exhibited different cognitive structures for…

Butkovich, Nancy J.; And Others – Database, 1991
Describes the design and implementation of the Reference Expert, a database based on INMAGIC software which contains problem reference questions and answers for use by library reference desk staff. Topics discussed include staff response to the database and problems encountered in its development. A sidebar describes the use of WORM…
Descriptors: College Libraries, Computer System Design, Database Management Systems, Databases
Peer reviewedMoore, Colleen F.; And Others – Child Development, 1991
Examined the development of proportional reasoning by means of a temperature mixture task. Results show the importance of distinguishing between intuitive knowledge and formal computational knowledge of proportional concepts. Provides a new perspective on the relation of intuitive and computational knowledge during development. (GLR)

Peer reviewedPicciarelli, V.; And Others – European Journal of Engineering Education, 1991
The results of an investigation concerned with sequential reasoning in interpreting the current flow in d.c. electric circuits are presented. Analysis of the results of a questionnaire completed by 236 college sophomores shows the presence of a common misunderstanding based on a "local" interpretation of the current flow. A copy of the…

Peer reviewedAndre, Thomas; Ding, Pin – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1991
The effects of students' misconceptions, declarative knowledge, and stimulus conditions on students' solutions to a problem in basic electricity were studied for 80 undergraduates at Iowa State University (Ames). The implications of the findings of influence by knowledge and stimulus conditions are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Classroom Research, Electricity, Higher Education, Knowledge Level
Peer reviewedSachs, Steven G. – TechTrends, 1991
Discusses thinking skills for college students and describes strategies that can be used by faculty to teach thinking skills in distance education courses. Criteria for teaching thinking skills to distance learners are suggested, and methods are presented for teaching problem solving, how to evaluate information, and decision making. (10…

Peer reviewedFernie, David E.; DeVries, Rheta – Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 1990
A total of 87 children, 3- to 7-years old, were examined in a study of children's play and reasoning in games of mathematical logic and social logic. Children's sophistication in reasoning was positively related for two games, suggesting a common three-level progression from mastery of procedures to a competitive attitude to advanced strategy. (SH)

Peer reviewedKing, Amy C.; Wilson, Joel E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1991
The purpose of this paper is to show, by computer examples, that very different results can be obtained by rearranging selected conditionally convergent series. Computer programs allow the students to select the real number to which they wish the rearrangement to converge. Two computer programs are appended. (KR)
Descriptors: Calculus, College Mathematics, Computation, Computer Assisted Instruction
Peer reviewedAscher, Marcia – Mathematics Magazine, 1990
Described are the variations found between the western and African versions of the same logic puzzle. It is demonstrated that mathematical ideas are of concern in traditional non-Western cultures as well as in the West. (KR)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Cultural Awareness, Foreign Countries, Higher Education
Peer reviewedSolomon, Frederick – Mathematics Magazine, 1990
Explored are the distributions of residual components in two model systems. A system of components with exponentially distributed lifetimes and the two-dimensional "leaf model" in which objects fall on a plane with positions independent and normally distributed are discussed. Included are the definition, application, computations, and theorem. (KR)
