Ohanian, Susan – Learning, 1987
An expense account book report encourages students to be creative and doesn't penalize students with reading and writing disabilities. Pie graphs showing expenditures a character from a book might make reveal divergent thinking skills and with a minimum of words. A reproducible worksheet is included. (MT)

Cleveland, William S.; McGill, Robert – Science, 1985
Graphical perception is the visual decoding of the quantitative and qualitative information encoded on graphs. Some recent theoretical/experimental investigations of graphical perception are described, identifying certain elementary graphical-perception tasks that are performed in the visual decoding of quantitative information from graphs.…

McKay, Ian A.; Parson, Helen E. – Clearing House, 1985
Discusses the construction of logarithmic and arithmetic scales illustrates why they should be used, and demonstrates the difference between them. Offers suggestions for classroom applications of the scales. (FL)

Innes, Jay – American Annals of the Deaf, 1985
The paper describes how "IBM Graphing Assistant" and "Apple Softgraph" can foster a multifaceted approach to application of mathematical concepts and how a survey can be undertaken using the computer as word processor, data bank, and source of visual displays. Mathematical skills reinforced include estimating, rounding, graphing, and solving…

Barth, John L. – Journal of Special Education, 1983
Twenty-four braille readers (grades 4-12) performed a line-tracking task on tactile line graphs which differed in the type of raised line used to represent the data curves and natures of the display backgrounds. Grids impaired the trackability of every line tested, while line type and grade level had only marginal effects. (Author/CL)

Snowball, George J. – Special Libraries, 1972
Three solutions to the problem of treating compiled statistical data graphically are proposed. The first is based on the concept of index number and the other two are based on component-bar graphs. (2 references) (Author/NH)

Gross, Alan G. – Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, 1990
Argues that tables, graphs, and diagrams extend language's power by exploiting the Euclidean possibilities which a text suggests. Notes that graphic display elements form no compatible natural set and that their value and visual elements are decisively disparate. Concludes that graphic displays are unlikely candidates for unitary theoretical…

Craven, Timothy C. – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1992
Describes research that investigated a method of automatically generating concept association maps that could be useful to abstractors. The use of word stems as concept surrogates, cooccurrence to define concept links, and a general-purpose graph-drawing algorithm is described; and results of evaluation of two link selection methods are reported.…
