Capturing Love in Mothers' Food Care: Towards a New Typology of Maternal Love
Gender and Education, v37 n6 p707-723 2025
When fulfilling caregiving roles, mothers show their love for their children through diverse and culturally influenced ways of providing food. The cultural construction of maternal love and the agency of mothers in food care deserve specific attention. Drawing on a refined cultural repertoire and assemblage theories, we explored maternal food care through interviewing 30 working- and middle-class mothers in Guangzhou, China. We found that cultural repertoires of maternal love diverge in terms of individual and relational goals. These repertoires are combined through capitalist and nomadic assemblages, which result in four types of maternal love. The findings reveal the struggles of contemporary Chinese mothers as they navigate between socially engineered values and traditional parenting ideals of natural growth. With a new typology of maternal love, this study provides additional insights on the cultural and affective dimensions of mothering.
