Peer reviewedBrandenburg, Dale C.; And Others – Research in Higher Education, 1977
Using 3,355 class section means, the relationship between six predictor variables and student ratings of instruction was investigated. All linear interactions were found to be negligible although two predictor variables, expected grade and required-elective, provided large contributions to the prediction of the criterion measure. (Author/LBH)
Descriptors: Evaluation Criteria, Grades (Scholastic), Higher Education, Measurement Instruments
Peer reviewedHeath, Douglas H. – Journal of Higher Education, 1977
A longitudinal study of 68 college-educated men, studied when freshmen and upperclassmen and also in their early 30's, examined the academic predictors of maturity and a wide range of adult competencies. SAT scores, achievement tests, college grades, faculty ratings, and honors were related to measures of psychological immaturity. Implications for…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Achievement Tests, College Role, Competence
Peer reviewedSchloss, Patrick J.; And Others – Journal of Educational Technology Systems, 1988
Describes study of 122 undergraduate and graduate students that contrasted the effects of two error correction procedures on student achievement when using computer assisted instruction. Analyses of variance were used to determine whether question type or error response affected subsequent responses to factual and higher cognitive questions.…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Analysis of Variance, Computer Assisted Instruction, Feedback
Peer reviewedVu, Nu V.; And Others – Journal of Medical Education, 1987
A study investigated the incremental value of a medical reasoning aptitude test to predict students' overall medical school performance and knowledge and clinical reasoning during preclinical years and clerkship performance. (MSE)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Aptitude Tests, Clinical Experience, Higher Education
Peer reviewedGamache, Leann M.; Novick, Melvin R. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1985
Differential prediction of two-year grade point average is reported for gender groups within university programs of study. Johnson-Neyman analyses indicated regions on the predictor score scales where differential prediction has practical impact for a significant portion of students. Careful selection of a subset of variables can reduce…
Descriptors: College Entrance Examinations, Grade Point Average, Higher Education, Majors (Students)
Peer reviewedGarrett, R. M. – Studies in Science Education, 1986
Reviews studies related to problem solving in science education. Discusses findings in the areas of investigative methods, improvement of problem-solving abilities, task variables (puzzles, problems), and subject variables (cognitive structures, developmental factors, disposition). (ML)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Instructional Improvement, Literature Reviews, Predictor Variables
Warnock, Mairi; Boss, Marvin W. – Canadian Journal for Exceptional Children, 1987
Eighty fourth-graders enrolled in an English/French bilingual program in Canada were administered an auditory skills battery of six tests to measure auditory discrimination and short-term auditory memory. It was concluded that a relationship exists between certain auditory perceptual abilities and school achievement independent of cognitive…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Auditory Discrimination, Auditory Tests, Bilingual Education Programs
Peer reviewedSearls, Evelyn F.; Neville, Donald D. – Journal of Research and Development in Education, 1988
This article reviews 34 studies in reading research. It identifies trends related to ambiguous findings about the effect of sentence-combining training on measures of reading comprehension. The effects of grade level and four other variables are described. The use of cloze procedures and standardized tests as measures is discussed. (Author/JL)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Higher Education, Instructional Program Divisions, Measurement Techniques
Educational-Vocational Implications of Field Dependence-Independence for Secondary School Graduates.
Peer reviewedKoroluk, Lorne E. – Canadian Journal of Counselling, 1987
Examined educational-vocational variables in relationship to field dependence-independence of individuals completing secondary school and entering occupations or educational programs. Concluded that field dependence-interdependence as measured by the Group Embedded Figures Test does have potential for academic and vocational counseling at the…
Descriptors: Academic Education, Career Choice, Career Counseling, Field Dependence Independence
Peer reviewedLarsen, Pam; Shertzer, Bruce – School Counselor, 1987
Discusses the social consequences of dropping out of high school, the behavioral patterns of dropping out, and predictors of dropping out. Suggests that counselors identify potential dropouts early, start programs targeted to meet potential dropouts' needs, and keep in contact with them. (Author/ABB)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Counselor Role, Dropout Characteristics, Dropout Prevention
Peer reviewedAbedi, Jamal; Benkin, Ellen – Research in Higher Education, 1987
Data from the National Research Council's Doctorate Records File extract prepared for UCLA indicated that source of support was the most important variable in predicting time to doctorate. Following source of support were postdoctoral plans, number of dependents, sex, and field of study. (Author/MLW)
Descriptors: College Students, Demography, Doctoral Degrees, Higher Education
Peer reviewedWineburg, Samuel S. – Educational Researcher, 1987
This rejoinder reiterates the author's position that the self-fulfilling prophesy phenomenon can not be proved. Unsuccessful efforts to replicate the "Pygmalion" study are presented. Because replication is essential to proofs in behavioral science research, the phenomenon can not be considered valid to behavioral scientists. (VM)
Descriptors: Behavioral Science Research, Children, Disadvantaged, Minority Groups
Tonnes-Schnier, Felicitas; Scheibner-Herzig, Gudrun – IRAL, 1988
A study investigated the usefulness of dictation for measuring communicative competence and oral proficiency in English as a second language. Two methods of scoring dictation were used: a scale of communicative effectiveness, and the traditional error count. (MSE)
Descriptors: Communicative Competence (Languages), Dictation, English (Second Language), Language Proficiency
Peer reviewedGarland, Kathleen; Rike, Galen E. – Journal of Education for Library and Information Science, 1987
This study examined the relationship between scholarly publication by faculty teaching in library and information science programs and 18 selected variables. Six variables were found to be predictors of faculty productivity: highest degree earned, size of faculty, years elapsed from bachelors's to highest degree, program type, prestige of program,…
