Peer reviewedTakane, Yoshio – Psychometrika, 1987
Ideal point discriminant analysis (IPDA) is proposed for the analysis of contingency tables of cross-classified data. Several data sets illustrate IPDA, which combines log-linear and dual scaling models to provide a spatial representation of row and column categories and allow statistical evaluation of various structural hypotheses about…

Peer reviewedChoulakian, Vartan – Psychometrika, 1988
L. A. Goodman's loglinear formulation for bi-way contingency tables is extended to tables with or without missing cells and is used for exploratory purposes. Three-way tables and generalizations of correspondence analysis are deduced, and a generalized version of Goodman's algorithm is used to estimate scores in all cases. (Author/TJH)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Equations (Mathematics), Mathematical Models, Maximum Likelihood Statistics
Peer reviewedFollmann, Dean – Psychometrika, 1988
The equivalence between non-parametric marginal logistic models (NMLMs) and a class of discrete marginal logistic models is examined. Parametric models offer some of the advantages of the NMLMs approach, but there are more restrictions on the manifest probabilities. (SLD)
Descriptors: Equations (Mathematics), Estimation (Mathematics), Item Analysis, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedMuthen, Bengt; Hofacker, Charles – Psychometrika, 1988
A model is proposed for empirically testing the appropriateness of using tetrachoric correlations for a set of dichotomous variables. A testing method is proposed that uses information from trivariate marginal tables. Assumptions are tested with real and simulated data. (SLD)
Descriptors: Equations (Mathematics), Estimation (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Hypothesis Testing
Peer reviewedGriffith, Belver C. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1988
Presents a system of software and analysis for the development of mathematical models designed to explain the structure in large bibliographic data sets. The discussion covers the goodness of fit obtained in testing and replications, and the implications for the control of large information systems. (six references) (CLB)
Descriptors: Bibliometrics, Computer Software, Data Analysis, Goodness of Fit
Peer reviewedKang, Johan Moonwon – Economics of Education Review, 1993
In 1984 "Economics of Education Review" paper, E. Bell indicates that, when capital markets are imperfect in a certain sense, demand for education may not always be directly related with present net value of education. This study shows Bell's paradox is possible under the alternative definitions of capital market imperfections and…

Peer reviewedValsiner, Jaan – Human Development, 1994
Comments on van Geert's mathematical model of Vygotsky's zone of proximal development, in this issue. Supports van Geert's use of a nonlinear model, noting that linear statistical models overlook variability in psychological phenomena. Discusses the time asymmetry in van Geert's model, which does not account for a subject's "developmental…

Peer reviewedSchmajuk, Nestor A.; DiCarlo, James J. – Psychological Review, 1991
The participation of the hippocampus in classical conditioning is described in terms of a multilayer network portraying stimulus configuration. A model of hippocampal function is presented, and computer simulations are used to study neural activity in the various brain areas mapped according to the model. (SLD)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Classical Conditioning, Computer Simulation, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedHeth, C. Donald – Psychological Review, 1991
A formal model is presented of the statistical properties of molecular behavioral matching. The model indicates that aggregation effects should be controlled in analysis of matching and that comparison of molecular theories of matching performance affords ideographic analysis of choice behavior. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Data Analysis, Decision Making, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedSuen, Wing – Journal of Economic Education, 1992
Presents a diagrammatic proof for classroom use to demonstrate the quasi-convexity of the indirect utility function. Includes a variation of the price indifference curve. Suggests an exercise in which the student is asked to show that the tangency condition is a restatement of Roy's identity. (DK)
Descriptors: Cost Effectiveness, Costs, Diagrams, Economics Education
Peer reviewedGibbons, Robert D.; Hedeker, Donald R. – Psychometrika, 1992
An item-response model for binary response data exhibiting the bi-factor structure is derived, and a practical parameter estimation method is developed. The model, which provides an alternate to the traditional conditionally independent unidimensional item response theory model, is illustrated with an example from psychiatric research. (SLD)
Descriptors: Equations (Mathematics), Estimation (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Item Response Theory
Peer reviewedCarifio, James – Evaluation Review, 1992
To solve an applied research problem with bipolar data, a set of equations was developed that combined all plus and minus data combinations into unique values and scale points. The equations were tested through computer simulations and empirical tests. Resulting index scores were approximately interval and linear and easy to use and interpret.…

Peer reviewedBrowne, Michael W.; Du Toit, S. H. C. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
Describes a method for automated parameter estimation and testing of fit of nonstandard models for mean vectors and covariance matrices, allowing for nonlinear equality and inequality constraints on model parameters. Users need only provide subroutines to evaluate mean vector and covariance matrix according to the model and constraint functions.…

Peer reviewedHanson, Bradley A. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1991
Log-linear model bivariate smoothing and a bivariate smoothing model based on the four-parameter beta binomial model were compared for usefulness in frequency estimation common-item equipercentile equating using two datasets. The performance of smoothed equipercentile methods was also compared to that of linear methods of common-item equating.…

Peer reviewedHuck, Schuyler W. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
Three factors that increase score variability yet can be associated with an increase, a decrease, or no change in Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) are discussed (restriction of range, errors of measurement, and linear transformations of data). The connection between changes in variability and r depends on how changes occur. (SLD)
