Why We Need Trauma-Informed Campuses Now More than Ever
Kirsten M. Weber; Natalie F. Douglas; Tierney Popp; Rachael K. Nelson
About Campus, v29 n1 p29-38 2024
Often, experiences of trauma challenge a person's ability to cope. Although many students on college campuses carry around trauma, the COVID-19 pandemic placed a magnifying glass on student mental health that made it clear universities cannot be passive when it comes to supporting students through their trauma. In this article, the authors argue that universities should become trauma-informed campuses, especially, in light of the widespread and varied trauma among students. First the authors define trauma and discuss common traumas among college students, then they review general outcomes of trauma and developmental considerations related to trauma experiences, finally, they offer recommendations regarding how to develop a trauma-informed campus and offer examples of trauma-informed practices from their own campus at Central Michigan University.
