Helping Students with Romantic Relationship Challenges: A Positive Psychology-Based Toolkit for College Counselors
Jessica Plouffe
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, University of Hartford
There is significant research literature on romantic relationships, positive psychology, and college students, but surprisingly little literature on two or more of those subject areas combined. Overall, the literature suggests that romantic relationships are an important developmental milestone for young adults, and that working with couples is an important competency for college counselors. However, there are gaps in the literature about psychoeducation on relationships for college students, helping college students with romantic relationship challenges, and using positive psychology in treatment of college students. Furthermore, most research in these subject areas underrepresents LGBTQ+ and racially diverse populations. Romantic relationships and positive psychology are connected in many important ways, suggesting that positive psychology may be a vital component of any romantic relationship education or treatment. This present dissertation will review the literature on college student romantic relationships and positive psychology and will present a resource guide for college counselors helping clients with their romantic relationships.
