A conference on terrorism at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was taken over by terrorists, hostages were seized, and negotiations failed. The goal of the conference was to teach about international terrorism. The events of the simulation are described and the exercise's accomplishments are discussed. (MLW)

International education is seen as standing on the verge of a major breakthrough in Congress. Several events have triggered interest: the President's Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies, the new Department of Education, Middle East crises, and reauthorizations of the Higher Education Act and the National Defense Education Act.…

Some national initiatives taken by the Department of Education to demonstrate its commitment to international education are discussed. What is needed is a conscious effort to overhaul the educational experience by taking a fresh look at existing curricular offerings, at textbooks, at syllabi, and at the quality of language teaching. A student survey conducted by the Educational Testing Service to assess what college students actually know and perceive about global relationships and to measure their comprehension of current global complexities is described. Results are provided along with a sample of test questions. (MLW)

The Council on Learning's Education and the World View project is described as a carefully defined public project of two years' duration to encourage serious curricular reconsiderations in our schools and colleges in view of the new realities of the world.
