Peer reviewedGoldman, Mark S. – American Psychologist, 1983
It appears that, although the cognitive functioning of many alcoholics remains impaired even after drinking has stopped, considerable recovery can occur. New findings now suggest the possibility of reducing cognitive dysfunction and enhancing alcoholism treatment outcomes. (CMG)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Alcoholism, Cognitive Processes, Middle Aged Adults
Peer reviewedCohen, A. S.; And Others – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Two experiments were conducted to assess whether the distribution of fixation times might be related to the prevailing cognitive activity involved with two different tasks, i.e., driving and observing colored fields. The results suggest that the distribution of fixation times can be associated with the prevailing cognitive activity while viewing.…
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Eye Fixations, Individual Characteristics, Pictorial Stimuli
Peer reviewedPollatsek, Alexander; Rayner, Keith – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1982
The functions of spaces between words in adult reading of text were investigated in three experiments. Results were consistent with a two-process theory in which filling parafoveal spaces disrupts guidance of the next eye movement and filling foveal spaces disrupts processing of the fixated word as well. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Adults, Eye Fixations, Eye Movements, Reading Processes
Peer reviewedGrant, David W. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Thirty nine 11-year-old children were given the same unilateral word-naming task on two separate occasions. A test-retest reliability of .46 was a function of both reading ability and sex. (Author)
Descriptors: Foreign Countries, Intermediate Grades, Reading Ability, Reading Research
Peer reviewedMessina, T. M. Fogliani; Fogliani, A. M. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
Tachistoscopic tests to identify three-letter words and simple geometric shapes were administered to 64 Italian children, ages 7-8. Results showed no significant differences in visual perceptual threshold between the two hemifields for either test, which was interpreted as confirming a lesser and not definitely determined lateralization in…
Descriptors: Cerebral Dominance, Neurological Organization, Pictorial Stimuli, Primary Education
Peer reviewedFagan, Joseph F., III; McGrath, Susan Krahe – Intelligence, 1981
Statistically significant correlations of .37 and .57 were obtained between infant recognition memory scores obtained at four to seven months and later vocabulary tests of intelligence, for 54 children tested at four and for 39 children seen at seven years, respectively. Obtained values did not vary by sex. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Infants, Intelligence, Longitudinal Studies, Predictive Validity
Peer reviewedLewis, Michael; Brooks-Gunn, Jeanne – Intelligence, 1981
The predictive power of various cognitive skills at three months of age in terms of later cognitive functioning was examined. Visual habituation and recovery predicted later intellectual functioning at 24 months better than global intelligence or object permanence scores. Changes in cognitive functioning may be a transformation of skills.…
Descriptors: Attention Control, Cognitive Processes, Correlation, Infants
Peer reviewedHawes, M. Dixie; Danhauer, Jeffrey L. – Sign Language Studies, 1980
An investigation of the confusion resulting from reliance on visual perceptual teachers in the identification of dactylemes (handshapes) in the American Manual Alphabet (MA) is reported. A hierarchy of errors varying with subjects' degree of expertness in the MA is established. This can help manual communication teachers develop techniques for…
Descriptors: Adults, Communication Problems, Communication Skills, Deafness
Peer reviewedMason, Mildred – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1980
Two experiments using varying duration exposures related reading skill in adults to initial encoding of location information. Results suggest that the role of perception in reading has been underestimated because emphasis has been on item perception, not perception of spatial location. (Author/CP)
Descriptors: Cues, Higher Education, Letters (Alphabet), Perceptual Development
Hatfield, Elizabeth M. – Sight-Saving Review, 1979
The article considers methods and standards for screening infants and young children for visual handicaps. Eye screening at three basic age levels is examined: newborn, six months, and three to five years. (DLS)
Descriptors: Handicapped Children, Identification, Infants, Neonates
Peer reviewedBanbury, Mary M. – Top of the News, 1980
Reviews 13 books designed to remediate and reinforce the visual perceptual skills of learning-disabled children in the primary grades. The role of the librarian in selecting and suggesting appropriate books for such children is also briefly discussed. (BK)
