Langstaff, Anne L.; And Others – 1973
Compared was the performance of 17 preschool and 10 early elementary educable mentally retarded (EMR) children with the performance of 50 normal preschool children on a developmental sequence of tasks in visual perception. Tested were the skills of recognition, discrimination, recall, and reconstruction of common objects, size concepts, shape…

Langstaff, Anne L.; Higgins, Marilyn – 1973
Compared was the performance of nine educable mentally retarded (EMR) children (mean age 9 years) with the performance of 50 normal kindergarten children on a test of visual perception at the abstract level. The test of 17 items involved the dimensions of size, shape, and color at four steps of skill attainment (recognition, discrimination,…

Brown, Donald R.; Ottinger, D. R. – 1970
Four studies with infants and preschool-age children examined various pattern perception tasks considered to be related to the perceptual basis of the development of reading skills. Study 1 used 28 neonates to test the hypothesis that supplemental stimulation (rocking, patting, holding) has measurable effects upon attention to visual patterns.…

Gibson, Eleanor J. – 1971
The work described in this report is aimed at understanding the role of cognitive development, especially perceptual development, in the reading process and its acquisition. The papers included describe: (1) a theory of perceptual learning, (2) an investigation of the perception of morphological information, (3) the role of categorical semantic…

Langstaff, Anne L.; Volkmor, Cara B. – 1971
A model for sequencing tasks in the area of visual perception was developed. This paper reports an attempt to validate the structure of the model. The performance of 50 normal preschool children on a 47 item test was studied. The results obtained support the use of the model as a framework for developing visual perception tasks. (Author)

D'Annunzio, Anthony; Steg, Doreen E. – 1972
The effects of certain procedures as part of the curriculum in early childhood on the perceptual readiness of children exposed to it are explored. The procedures include: (1) the testing of each child to determine perceptual strengths and weaknesses; (2) the development of "learning print" for each child: a description of integrities and deficits…

Wood, Nancy E. – Academic Therapy, 1977
A study involving 8 children (mean age 9.3 years; seven Ss with possible visual-perceptual disability) was conducted to determine if directed art activities could increase visual perception as measured by the Frostig Developmental Test of Visual Perception. (SBH)

Harris, Paul L.; And Others – Journal of Child Language, 1986
English-speaking and Dutch-speaking children were asked to pick the big, tall, or long members of pairs of bricks. Comprehension improved with age but older children in both groups were prone to choose the taller (but smaller) of two objects when asked to point to the bigger one. (SED)

Miller, Leon K. – Child Development, 1973
One question prompting the present research concerned the relation between performance under tachistoscopic'' conditions where exposure durations are too brief to permit active overt visual search, and performance when overt search is possible. (Author)

Kershner, John R. – Journal of Social Psychology, 1972
A study comparing Chicano and Anglo children in spatial and language abilities showed that Chicanos were better in spatial ability and poorer in language comprehension. The findings were interpretated as demonstrating ethnic group differences in information processing strategies and the polarity of verbal and spatial skills in some children. (JB)
