Storkel, Holly L.; Komesidou, Rouzana; Fleming, Kandace K.; Romine, Rebecca Swinburne – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 2017
Purpose: The goal of this study was to provide guidance to clinicians on early benchmarks of successful word learning in an interactive book reading treatment and to examine how encoding and memory evolution during treatment contribute to word learning outcomes by kindergarten children with specific language impairment (SLI). Method: Twenty-seven…

Ernst, Jeremy Vaughn; Lane, Diarmaid; Clark, Aaron C. – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 2015
The ability to rotate visual mental images is a complex cognitive skill. It requires the building of graphical libraries of information through short or long term memory systems and the subsequent retrieval and manipulation of these towards a specified goal. The development of mental rotation skill is of critical importance within engineering…

Rhodes, Matthew G.; Castel, Alan D. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 2008
Although perceptual information is utilized to judge size or depth, little work has investigated whether such information is used to make memory predictions. The present study examined how the font size of to-be-remembered words influences predicted memory performance. Participants studied words for a free-recall test that varied in font size and…

Snodgrass, Joan Gay – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1984
Considers the use of picture-word and bilingualism research together to look for parallels at both the theoretical and empirical levels. Describes some of the criteria that have been used in both fields to infer common or separate codes and points out how conclusions based on the various criteria proposed can differ. (EKN)
Descriptors: Bilingualism, Concept Formation, Language Research, Memory
Kroll, Judith F.; Potter, Mary C. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1984
Reports on experiments that address the question of whether pictures and the words that name them access a common conceptual representation. Results suggest that the major component in a lexical or objective decision is a form-specific memory representation of the work or visual object. (EKN)

Igo, L. Brent; Kiewra, Kenneth A.; Zumbrunn, Sharon K.; Kirschbaum, Allison L. – Journal of Experimental Education, 2007
Students (N = 124) viewed 14 timed Web pages that distinguished 14 confusing word pairs. In a 2 x 2 factorial design, the authors gave all of the students matrices containing representational pictures for each pair of words, as well as examples of each word in use. One factor in the design was the absence or presence of rules of usage for each…

Anooshian, Linda; Carlson, Jerry S. – Human Development, 1973
Tests designed to measure conservation, visual memory, and static and anticipatory imagery were administered to 1st and 2nd grade children. Conservation and memory correlated significantly with IQ. The different mental processes may be involved in the development of anticipatory imagery and conservation. (CS)
Descriptors: Conservation (Concept), Elementary School Students, Intellectual Development, Memory
Levie, Howard; Levie, Diane – AV Communication Review, 1975
In two experiments, volunteer subjects were asked to look at words and pictures, with or without an interference task. The results are interpreted to support a theory of a separate but not totally independent pictorial memory system. (Editor)

Rixecker, H.; Hartje, W. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Administered Kimura's Recurring-Figures-Test to 427 normal subjects from Germany. A Kuder-Richardson test reliability was obtained. T-scale norms are given for two subgroups of different educational levels. Results indicated that the RFT is a valid instrument for the assessment of nonverbal memory function, and has a high test reliability. (Author)

Crosson, Bruce; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1984
Discusses Russell's (1975) system for administering and scoring the Logical Memory and Visual Reproduction subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale. Certain innovations such as obtaining a delayed recall appear to be useful, but comparisons with other studies indicate difficulty with the impairment ratings that were devised. (JAC)

Rodenborn, Leo V., Jr. – 1972
Presented is a test used to measure visual perception ability, which consists of 30 groups of forms that are similar to lines used in forming letters, but do not make letters. They are comparable to nonsense syllables used to simulate words. Each group includes four forms and is numbered. The test was used in Rodenborn's study to determine the…

Pezdek, Kathy – Child Development, 1987
Assessed the effect of the amount of physical detail in pictures on the picture recognition memory of 7- and 9-year-olds, young adults, and adults over 68. For each age group, recognition accuracy was significantly higher for pictures presented in the simple rather than the complex form. (PCB)

Kagan, Jerome; And Others – Child Development, 1973
Although the performance of American 5- and 8-year-olds was superior to the Guatemalans, the 11-year-olds in both cultures performed at an equally high level. (Authors)

Bray, Norman W.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1985
Use of strategies to eliminate interference from irrelevant information in memory was investigated for 11-, 15-, and 18-year-olds. A directed forgetting paradigm was introduced. Results suggest that 11-year-olds use adequate selective remembering strategy, but not selective rehearsal: most 15- and 18-year-olds did. (Author/DST)
