Stenlund, Tova; Sundström, Anna; Jonsson, Bert – Educational Psychology, 2016
This study examined whether practice testing with short-answer (SA) items benefits learning over time compared to practice testing with multiple-choice (MC) items, and rereading the material. Peer reviewedDodd, David K.; Leal, Linda – Teaching of Psychology, 1988
Discusses answer justification, a technique that allows students to convert multiple-choice items perceived to be "tricky" into short-answer essay questions. Peer reviewedKolstad, Rosemarie K.; And Others – Educational Research Quarterly, 1983

In two independent comparisons, performance on the CMC items surpassed that of the multiple true-false clusters. Data indicate that performance on CMC items is inflated, and distractors on CMC items fail to prevent guessing. (Author/PN)

DiBattista, David; Mitterer, John O.; Gosse, Leanne – Teaching in Higher Education, 2004
Undergraduates completed a questionnaire after using the Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique (IFAT), a commercially available answer form for multiple-choice (MC) testing that can be used easily and conveniently with large classes. This simple new technique for MC testing provides immediate feedback for each item in an answer-until-correct…
