Beyond Barriers: Using Virtual Reality and 3D Printing to Connect Youth in Detention Centers to Global and Local Issues of Displacement
Amy Walker; Kristy Pytash
Voices from the Middle, v32 n3 p20-24 2025
Little work has been done to investigate the implementation of innovative technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) and 3D printing, during English language arts instruction in juvenile detention facilities. This study explored how technology integration in restricted spaces can lead students to develop connections and empathy toward others. The project incorporated VR and 3D printing technologies into a unit on the graphic novel, "Illegal." After reading the novel, students engaged in the VR story, "The Key," an immersive and interactive narrative experience around the plight of refugees. Afterward, inspired by the graphic novel and the VR experience, students constructed keychains using a 3D printer of a word that symbolized refugees' struggles and communicated encouragement. These keychains were given to local refugee youth.
