Ruben Ballesteros Gutierrez
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive, single case study was to explore how K-8 teachers, lead teachers, and school administrators in an Arizona school district experienced shared leadership and described its influence on student and school success. The theoretical foundation that provided a lens for this study was the theory of shared leadership. The research questions that guided the study encompassed how K-8 teachers, lead teachers, and school administrators experienced shared leadership, and described the influence of shared leadership on student success and school success. Purposeful sampling was utilized for a sample size of 30 participants. Data were collected from an open-ended questionnaire; semi-structured, one-on-one interviews; and one focus group, and were analyzed through inductive thematic analysis and data triangulation. Four themes emerged. Results indicated that shared leadership was experienced when the voices and ideas of all stakeholder's were sought out, encouraged, listened to, and valued; and when the strengths, skills, experiences, and expertise of every stakeholder were identified, validated, and utilized for the advancement of all. Moreover, student success was influenced when all stakeholders worked together as a team collaboratively towards one shared goal, mission, and vision. School success was influenced through the outcomes of a positive school culture and climate that were created through genuine care for all stakeholders. The findings detailed the importance of providing the time and support to collaborate, share ideas and receive feedback. The findings also detailed the importance of creating a positive school culture and climate that is conducive to the learning and growth of all stakeholders.
