Dougherty, B. Christopher; Fantaske, Patti – New Directions for Higher Education, 1996
Gives an overview of the components of the problem-solving process, emphasizing its iterative, not linear, character. Describes how individual characteristics influence problem solving choices and outcomes, and discusses ways in which understanding of problem-solving informs some innovative teaching techniques, with examples from individual…

Peer reviewedCasey, Patrick J. – Computers in the Schools, 1997
Argues that including computer programming in the curriculum as a medium for instruction is a feasible alternative for teaching problem solving. Discusses the nature of problem solving; the problem-solving elements of discovery, motivation, practical learning situations and flexibility which are inherent in programming; capabilities of computer…

Peer reviewedBohlmann, Natalie L. – Teaching and Change, 1997
A first grade teacher in a diverse school assessed students' abilities to solve nonroutine math problems by examining their problem-solving processes. Results show that allowing students to develop their own methods of problem solving helps them internalize the process and articulate their solutions to others, thus becoming teachers themselves.…

Peer reviewedWilde, Sandra – Arithmetic Teacher, 1991
Discussed is the value of making writing a regular part of the mathematics curriculum. Writing skills can be used in creating word problems, bilingual classrooms, process problems, mathematics journals, and as a diagnostic tool. Included are examples of students math work and written explanations. (KR)

Peer reviewedRoss, John A. – American Educational Research Journal, 1988
Two field experiments were conducted to compare the effects of a cooperative learning group method to a whole-class method on acquisition of selected social-environmental studies problem-solving skills by 342 fourth graders. Both methods outperformed the control, but the cooperative strategy was less effective than was the whole-class method. (TJH)

Peer reviewedTodd, David; Pickering, Miles – Journal of Chemical Education, 1988
Notes that laboratory work should be more oriented towards puzzle solving rather than technique or illustration. Offers three organic laboratory puzzles which can be solved by melting point alone. Involves lab work at the 100-200-mg scale but still uses conventional glassware. (MVL)

Peer reviewedKieren, Thomas E.; Olson, Alton T. – Mathematics Teacher, 1989
Two incidents involving novice teachers with classes in grades 7 and 10 are presented. Then considered are the nature of intuitive mathematics and contributions computers can make to such intuitive mathematics, particularly in Algebra. (MNS)

Peer reviewedBransford, John D.; And Others – Peabody Journal of Education, 1986
Three general areas in which technology (microcomputers and video technology) can facilitate learning are discussed: (1) helping students develop fluency (rapid recognition of familiar patterns); (2) providing rich problem-solving contexts that invite thinking; and (3) enabling students to create products that catch the attention of their teachers…

Peer reviewedWoodward, John – Elementary School Journal, 1994
Examined the effects of science curricula organized around topical and causal styles of discourse on 46 eighth graders. Found that students taught with the causal style of discourse had significantly higher retention rates and could better apply their knowledge to problem-solving exercises than students taught with the topical style. (MDM)

Bozzone, Meg A. – Instructor, 1994
The article presents 10 tips for developing an effective conflict resolution program that provides students with the necessary skills to work issues out peacefully between themselves. Conflict resolution warmup activities from classroom teachers and a guide to conflict resolution resources and programs are also included. (SM)

Peer reviewedPhillips, Richard J.; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1995
This paper considers ways in which interactive video (IV) is used in mathematics classrooms in England. Teachers (n=14) chose modules from a package of 17. The three modules most used by teachers are discussed. Researchers found that IV use puts greater emphasis on process skills. (14 references) (Author/(MLB)
