Frank, Alan R.; And Others – Career Development for Exceptional Individuals, 1980
The article presents two teaching strategies for use with elementary age educable mentally retarded students. The first introduces the concept of the equivalence of a nickel and five pennies in terms of buying power. The second strategy involves teaching students the skill of adding various combinations of nickels and pennies. (PHR)

Isaacs, Andrew C.; Carroll, William M. – Teaching Children Mathematics, 1999
Most people recognize that children should learn basic facts, because knowing them is useful both in school and in real life outside the classroom. Describes a strategies approach to basic addition and subtraction-facts instruction, and discusses assessment techniques and a rationale for the approach. Contains 29 references. (ASK)

Grobecker, Betsey – 1998
Six- to eight-year-old children (N=42) who were identified by their teachers as within the average range of ability in mathematics were individually tested on three different mathematics tasks. On the flashcard task and the nonverbal task where children replicated the number of buttons placed under a box, the same 14 addition problems with sums up…

Tapson, Frank – Mathematics in School, 1974
Motivation for practicing basic arithmetic skills is provided by activities based on dart board games. There activities also require participants to devise winning strategies, adding enrichment to the game-type drills. (JP)

Marotta, George A. – 1973
The purpose of this study was to survey and examine the history of teaching of the basic addition facts in elementary school mathematics in the United States from colonial times to 1950. This examination is intended to provide insight into the causes of frustrations in teaching the facts in the past and possibly serve to alleviate anxiety in the…

Steinberg, Ruth M. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1985
This study: (1) documented the spontaneous derived facts strategies (DGSs) that second-grade children (N=23) used; (2) investigated how training in use of DFSs influenced the solution strategies children used to solve addition and subtraction problems; and (3) examined the role of DFSs in the transition to recall of number facts. Ortiz, Enrique – 2003
The purposes of this paper are to present research related to the development of new instructional games (named Survivor's Games), and measure the effectiveness of these games to help students (K-5) master basic fact operations (single-digit additions or factor and single- or double digit sums or products), stimulate the exploration of…

Kulm, Gerald – 1985
Recent research has provided a reasonably coherent picture of how children learn to add and subtract. There is clear evidence that children do not learn simply by mastering a procedure and storing in memory. Instead, learning is structured in meaningful ways, connected to previous knowledge, and adapted to new contexts. This view of learning has…

Spitler, Gail – B.C. Journal of Special Education, 1978
Presented is a paradigm for teaching basic and semibasic arithmetic facts to children with arithmetic difficulties, in which the student progresses from the use of concrete materials such as blocks, to the use of diagrams such as tally marks, to a reasoning process, to responding in an automatic manner. (DLS)

Ruais, Ronald W. – Mathematics Teacher, 1978
An algorithm is given for the addition and subtraction of fractions based on dividing the sum of diagonal numerator and denominator products by the product of the denominators. As an explanation of the teaching method, activities used in teaching are demonstrated. (MN)

Merseth, Katherine Klippert – NCTM Yearbook, 1978
Helping teachers to build a strong bridge from concrete experiences to algorithms is the focus. A detailed sequence of activities is described. (MN)
