Peer reviewedReiff, Judith C. – Clearing House, 1996
Discusses cognitive style and culture, and maintains that some students might be considered "at risk" when they are simply field-dependent learners. Describes characteristics of field-dependent and field-independent learners, and discusses strategies for use with the field-dependent learner. (SR)

Lee, Lynda Newby; Lee, Mickey M. – 1985
This study identified the cognitive style (as defined by the construct of field independence/dependence) of prospective teachers at Eastern Kentucky University and identified instructional strategies reflective of the field independent/dependent dimension of cognitive style. In the 1984 Fall Semester the Group Embedded Figures Test was…

Peer reviewedKardash, Carolanne M.; And Others – Journal of Educational Research, 1988
Results of an experimental study of 46 field-independent and 39 field-dependent undergraduates indicate that immediate testing after a lecture resulted in no performance differences on a delayed test. However, without immediate testing, field-independent students performed better. All students reviewed notes before delayed testing. (IAH)

Tendy, Susan M.; Geiser, William F. – 1997
This paper traces the history of 11 prominent learning style theorists from the 1970s to the present. Several theorists focused on the student's cognitive processing style. Manuel Ramirez attributed Mexican-American students' tendency toward field sensitivity to their socialization. Charles Letteri classified learners as analytic, global, or…

Garner, C. William – 1986
Years of research have shown that student learning is based on cognitive development. This finding has implications for the teaching of vocational education, especially to marginal students who are potential dropouts. Research has shown that students who have an internal rather than an external locus of control and who are more field independent…

Contreras, Maximiliano – 1985
People of different cultures differ in the cognitive style they use. Research reports that Mexican American children indicate a preference for field-sensitive cognitive strategies that are spatial-holistic, and middle class children a preference for field-independent strategies that are verbal-analytic. Brain research in hemisphericity appears to…

Peer reviewedStrawitz, Barbara M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Long-term retention effects of two methods of instruction used one year earlier to teach field-dependent and field-independent sixth-grade students to control variables and to transfer this ability to novel tasks were investigated. Also examined whether or not uninstructed seventh-grade students had acquired this ability on their own. (Author/JN)

Fritz, Robert L. – 1991
A study examined the association between field-dependence and its related information processing characteristics, and educational cognitive style as a model of conative influence. Data were collected from 145 secondary marketing education students in nothern Georgia during spring 1991. Descriptive statistics, Pearson product moment correlations,…

Pithers, Bob – 2000
A study used the standardized Group Embedded Figures Test to assess field dependence-field independence among groups of vocational education teachers of varied ages and teaching backgrounds. The sample consisted of 170 volunteers who were vocational education teachers and trainers in the process of completing the requirements for either a diploma…
