Peer reviewedHammarstrom, Goran – Language Sciences, 1975
This paper suggests an explicit way of integrating sociolectal and dialectal facts in the overall description of a language. Phonetic, morphological, syntactic and semantic units of the whole language are defined. (CK)

Ballweg, Joachim – Deutsche Sprache, 1974
Attempts to solve, by means of examples, some of the current problems in predicate raising (PR) in the theory of generative semantics. (Text is in German.) (DS)
Descriptors: Deep Structure, Generative Grammar, Linguistic Theory, Semantics
Peer reviewedCole, Peter – Language, 1974
It is proposed that syntactic processes (rules and constraints) may have a semantic basis. Evidence is presented that the constraint against backward pronominalization with indefinite antecedents derives from the semantic properties of various classes of definite noun phrases. (CK)

Holyoak, Keith J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
This study was based on that of Jorgensen and Kintsch (1973) regarding verification time and ease of imagery of sentences. The present study concluded that the results of Jorgensen and Kintsch do not distinguish the effects of rated imagery on reaction time from the effects of semantic relatedness and semantic complexity. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Comprehension, Imagery, Language Research, Linguistic Theory
Griffin, Peg – Linguistic Reporter, 1974
In this column, the term "pragmatics", a part of linguistic analysis, is explained. The study of pragmatics concerns language usage in natural context. The item of analysis is not the sentence, but the utterance of the sentence in a particular well-defined set of contexts. (SW)
Descriptors: Definitions, Language Usage, Linguistic Theory, Linguistics

Coleman, John; Local, John – 1989
A discussion of autosegmental phonology (AP), a theory of phonological representation that uses graphs rather than strings as the central data structure, considers its principal constraint, the "No Crossing Constraint" (NCC). The NCC is the statement that in a well-formed autosegmental diagram, lines of association may not cross. After…

Bruner, Jerome S. – 1983
It is in the nature of the development of the self that it becomes possible to maintain continuity in development while providing the basis for change. Language forms the self by making it possible for a user of language to relate himself as agent to others and to the culture. The formation of self depends powerfully on the meanings that a human…

Peer reviewedMoskal'skaja, O. I. – Linguistics, 1975
A word combination can have a grammatical function differing from that of the individual words which compose it. This increases the flexibility of lexical material and suggests a new approach to the classification of items in a lexicon. Examples are drawn mostly from German. (TL)
Descriptors: Form Classes (Languages), German, Grammar, Lexicology
