September Hope Cowley – ProQuest LLC, 2024
All communication systems rely on sets of rules that must generally be followed for successful communication to be possible; in the case of human language, these rules are given by the grammar. However, despite these rules, there is considerable variation that has been noted across the grammar. In this dissertation, I explore one understudied…

Eun Seon Chung – Language Learning & Technology, 2024
While previous investigations on online machine translation (MT) in language learning have analyzed how second language (L2) learners use and post-edit MT output, no study as of yet has investigated how the learners process MT errors and what factors affect this process using response and reading times. The present study thus investigates L2…

Olstad, Anne Marte Haug; Fritz, Isabella; Baggio, Giosuè – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2020
Understanding language requires the ability to compose the meanings of words into phrase and sentence meanings. Formal theories in semantics have framed the hypothesis that all instances of meaning composition, irrespective of the syntactic and semantic properties of the expressions involved, boil down to a unique formal operation, that is, the…

Jin, Jing; Ke, Sihui – Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 2021
This study is aimed to re-examine the Interface Hypothesis via investigating the adult L2 acquisition of the word order variation of numeral classifier indefinites at the syntax-semantics and syntax-discourse interfaces in L2 Chinese. A computerized acceptability judgment task was administered to 41 advanced and intermediate adult Korean learners…

Riches, N. G.; Loucas, T.; Baird, G.; Charman, T.; Simonoff, E. – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2016
According to the weak central coherence (CC) account individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) exhibit enhanced local processing and weak part-whole integration. CC was investigated in the verbal domain. Adolescents, recruited using a 2 (ASD status) by 2 (language impairment status) design, completed an aural forced choice comprehension…

Auditory Lexical Decisions in Developmental Language Disorder: A Meta-Analysis of Behavioral Studies
Jones, Samuel David; Brandt, Silke – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2018
Purpose: Despite the apparent primacy of syntactic deficits, children with developmental language disorder (DLD) often also evidence lexical impairments. In particular, it has been argued that this population have difficulty forming lexical representations that are detailed enough to support effective spoken word processing. In order to better…

Ravi, Sunil Kumar; Chengappa, Shyamala K. – International Journal of Multilingualism, 2015
The present study aimed at exploring the semantic and syntactic processing differences between native and second languages in 20 early high proficient Kannada--English bilingual adults through accuracy and reaction time (RT) measurements. Subjects participated in a semantic judgement task (using 50 semantically correct and 50 semantically…

Arai, Manabu; Nakamura, Chie; Mazuka, Reiko – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2015
A number of previous studies showed that comprehenders make use of lexically based constraints such as subcategorization frequency in processing structurally ambiguous sentences. One piece of such evidence is lexically specific syntactic priming in comprehension; following the costly processing of a temporarily ambiguous sentence, comprehenders…

Chang, Xin; Wang, Pei – Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 2016
To investigate the influence of L2 proficiency and syntactic similarity on English passive sentence processing, the present ERP study asked 40 late Chinese-English bilinguals (27 females and 13 males, mean age = 23.88) with high or intermediate L2 proficiency to read the sentences carefully and to indicate for each sentence whether or not it was…

Feng, Mingyu, Ed.; Käser, Tanja, Ed.; Talukdar, Partha, Ed. – International Educational Data Mining Society, 2023
The Indian Institute of Science is proud to host the fully in-person sixteenth iteration of the International Conference on Educational Data Mining (EDM) during July 11-14, 2023. EDM is the annual flagship conference of the International Educational Data Mining Society. The theme of this year's conference is "Educational data mining for…

Kauschke, Christina; Stenneken, Prisca – Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 2008
It has been suggested that the effect of word category in noun and verb processing reflects typical word class properties, which can be characterized in terms of semantic as well as syntactic and morphological features. The present study is aimed at differentiating and discussing the relative contribution of these aspects with a main focus on…

Holyoak, Keith J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
This study was based on that of Jorgensen and Kintsch (1973) regarding verification time and ease of imagery of sentences. The present study concluded that the results of Jorgensen and Kintsch do not distinguish the effects of rated imagery on reaction time from the effects of semantic relatedness and semantic complexity. (Author/RM)

Brousseau, Geri; Buchanan, Lori – Brain and Language, 2004
The semantic category effect represents a category dissociation between biological and nonbiological objects in picture naming. The aim of this preliminary study was to further examine this phenomenon, and to explore the possible association between the effect and subjective emotional valence for the named objects. Using a speeded picture naming…

Peer reviewedLangford, J.; Holmes, V. M. – Cognition, 1979
Two experiments indicated that sentence verification times were significantly longer when a discrepancy between target sentence and context was in the syntactic presupposition, rather than in the assertion. Findings are best explained by a structural hypothesis, not by strategies designed to locate given and new information. (Author/CP)

Townsend, David J.; Bever, Thomas G. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
In two experiments, subjects were interrupted while listening to a two-clause sentence just before the last word of either the initial clause or the final clause. The two experiments together suggest that interclause semantic relations affect the immediate processing of clauses. (Author/EJS)
