A Survey about Microaggressions toward Sexual Minority NCAA Woman Student-Athletes
Melissa Rios
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
Intercollegiate athletics are an integral element of higher education in the United States. They serve a critical role in fostering students' sense of comradeship while promoting competitive play among campuses and institutions. Despite such programs' significance in enhancing a spirit of sportsmanship in higher education, few psychological studies have ventured into examining how minority groups, such as sexual minority students engage in intercollegiate athletics. This study focuses on exploring the type of microaggressions that sexual minority women students typically face in the context of sports, which can have multiple effects on their mental health. This study used an adapted version of the Sexual Orientation Microaggression Inventory (SOMI) to measure level of exposure to microaggressions experienced in sports by sexual minority women who are student-athletes, and also examined participants' perceptions of who perpetrated microaggressions the most -- teammates or coaches/staff. The study's sample was composed of 44 self-identified sexual minority cisgender women who participated in college sports within the last 10 years. Findings indicate that sexual minority women who are student athletes experience more microaggressions from teammates than from coaches/staff, and that anti-gay attitudes are the most common type of microaggression they experience in the context of intercollegiate sports.
