Headrick, Todd C.; Beasley, T. Mark – 2002
Real world data often fail to meet the underlying assumptions of normal statistical theory. Many statistical procedures in the psychological and educational sciences involve models that may include a system of statistical equations with non-normal correlated variables (e.g., factor analysis, structural equation modeling, or other complex…

Hakstian, A. Ralph; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1980
The procedures yielding confidence intervals for maximized alpha coefficients of Joe and Woodward are reviewed. Confidence interval procedures of Whalen and Masson are next reviewed. Results are then presented of a Monte Carlo investigation of the procedures. (Author/CTM)

Davenport, Richard W. – ProQuest LLC, 2009
A Department of Defense (DoD) M&S education task force is in the process of studying the Modeling and Simulation (M&S) education of the acquisition workforce. Historically, DoD acquisition workforce education is not referred to as education, but rather what the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) refers to as "practitioner training, career…

Makwana, Alpesh P. – ProQuest LLC, 2009
"Pre-Trip Inspection" of the truck and trailer is one of the components of the current Commercial Driver's License (CDL) test. This part of the CDL test checks the ability of the student to identify the important parts of the commercial vehicle and their potential defects. The "Virtual Check Ride System" (VCRS), a…

Rafi, Ahmad; Samsudin, Khairulanuar – British Journal of Educational Technology, 2009
An experimental study involving 30 undergraduates (mean age = 20.5 years) in mental rotation (MR) training was conducted in an interactive Desktop Mental Rotation Trainer (iDeMRT). Stratified random sampling assigned students into one experimental group and one control group. The former trained in iDeMRT and the latter trained in conventional…

Ranalli, Jim – Computer Assisted Language Learning, 2008
With their realistic animation, complex scenarios and impressive interactivity, computer simulation games might be able to provide context-rich, cognitively engaging virtual environments for language learning. However, simulation games designed for L2 learners are in short supply. As an alternative, could games designed for the mass-market be…

Nylund, Karen L.; Asparouhov, Tihomir; Muthen, Bengt O. – Structural Equation Modeling: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2007
Mixture modeling is a widely applied data analysis technique used to identify unobserved heterogeneity in a population. Despite mixture models' usefulness in practice, one unresolved issue in the application of mixture models is that there is not one commonly accepted statistical indicator for deciding on the number of classes in a study…

Pierce, Benjamin A.; Honeycutt, Brenda B. – American Biology Teacher, 2007
Probability is an essential tool for understanding heredity and modern genetics, yet many students have difficulty with this topic due to the abstract and quantitative nature of the subject. To facilitate student learning of probability in genetics, we have developed a set of hands-on, cooperative activities that allow students to determine…

Annetta, Leonard; Mangrum, Jennifer; Holmes, Shawn; Collazo, Kimberly; Cheng, Meng-Tzu – International Journal of Science Education, 2009
The purpose of this study was to examine students' learning of simple machines, a fifth-grade (ages 10-11) forces and motion unit, and student engagement using a teacher-created Multiplayer Educational Gaming Application. This mixed-method study collected pre-test/post-test results to determine student knowledge about simple machines. A survey…

Schroeder, Lee L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1975
Describes a program system which was developed for the purpose of making estimates about the nature of the distribution of test scores which will result from an administration of a test composed of items of which estimates of item-difficulty and discrimination are available. (Author/RC)

DeMars, Christine E. – 2002
Using simulated data, the MULTILOG and PARSCALE software packages were compared for their recovery of item and trait parameters under the graded response and generalized partial credit item response theory models. The shape of the latent population distribution (normal, skewed, or uniform) and the sample size (250 or 500) were varied. Parameter…

Bloxom, Bruce – Psychometrika, 1979
A method is developed for estimating the response time distribution of an unobserved component in a two-component serial model. The estimate of the component's density function is constrained to be only unimodal and non-negative. Numerical examples suggest the method can yield reasonably accurate estimates with sample sizes of 300. (Author/CTM)

Harwell, Michael R.; Serlin, Ronald C. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1989
Two forms, pure-rank and mixed-rank, of a nonparametric, general, linear model-based statistic that can be used to test several hypotheses are presented. A Monte Carlo study was used to investigate the distributional properties of these forms, and their use is discussed. (SLD)
