Peer reviewedMillsap, Roger E. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1995
A theorem is presented that describes conditions under which measurement invariance is consistent with predictive invariance for the linear case. These two forms of invariance are shown to be inconsistent under realistic conditions, and the duality is illustrated with simulated data. Implications for group differences research are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Ethnicity, Groups, Measurement Techniques, Paradox
Peer reviewedLoehle, Craig – Journal of Creative Behavior, 1994
This article presents a queuing model simulation of scientific productivity utilizing critical path analysis. Creativity is found to have a large positive effect, a negative effect, or no effect on productivity, depending on the stage of the problem-solving process to which it is applied and the nature of the bottlenecks inherent to the specific…
Descriptors: Adults, Creativity, Critical Path Method, Models
Peer reviewedPedersen, Paul – Simulation & Gaming, 1994
Examines the Triad Training Model for training counselors to better articulate a client's internal dialog during simulated counseling interviews. The theoretical basis for the model is discussed, positive and negative feedback is considered, and supporting research is presented. (Contains 20 references.) (LRW)
Descriptors: Counseling Techniques, Counselor Training, Feedback, Literature Reviews
Peer reviewedPerry, C.; Delahaye, B. – Higher Education Research and Development, 1990
A study of the effects of team roles on the success of teams in business simulations found, contrary to expectation, that teams analyzing data on the basis of beliefs and values rather than logic were more successful. Implications for use of simulation in management education are discussed. (Author/MSE)
Descriptors: Beliefs, Business Administration Education, Group Dynamics, Higher Education
Peer reviewedCudahy, Edward; Link, H. Cynthia – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1991
A computerized hearing aid measurement system using simulated input and output compression hearing aids was compared to a manual technique using conventional laboratory instrumentation. Results matched closely, but the computer system was considerably more flexible and easier to use. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Audiology, Computer Assisted Testing, Equipment Evaluation, Hearing Aids
Peer reviewedKates, James M. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1991
This paper discusses the problem of feedback in hearing aids and offers examples based on a computer simulation of hearing aid behavior. The available technology for dealing with feedback is reviewed, and the new digital signal-processing approaches which may finally solve the feedback problem are described. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Audiology, Computers, Equipment Evaluation
Peer reviewedGoosen, Kenneth R.; Kusel, Jimie – Simulation & Gaming, 1993
Presents an interpolation methodology that duplicates and improves the results of mathematical functional relationships useful for designing business enterprise simulations and argues that interpolation is effective over the entire range of production and sales activity. (six references) (EA)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Business, Design, Economic Factors
Peer reviewedSolomon, David J.; And Others – Academic Medicine, 1990
In July 1989 the American Board of Emergency Medicine conducted a field test of the oral recertification examination process. Sixteen examiners and 25 examinees participated in the field test. The examination included 3 chart-stimulated recall and 3 simulated-patient encounter cases. (MLW)

Silberstein, Otmar; Brooke, Lawrence – Vocational Education Journal, 1994
In the sixth-grade science program at Peterson Middle School in Sunnyvale, California, grants and donated labor and materials were used to build a simulated space center. One of the capsules is devoted to growing vegetables hydroponically. Eighth-grade students serve as teaching assistants in the program, and biology and chemistry enrollments are…

Peer reviewedHeadrick, Todd C.; Sawilosky, Shlomo S. – Psychometrika, 1999
Proposes a procedure for generating multivariate nonnormal distributions. The procedure, an extension of the Fleishman power method (A. Fleishman, 1978), generates the average value of intercorrelations much closer to population parameters than competing procedures for skewed and heavy tailed distributions and small sample sizes. Reports Monte…

Peer reviewedSmith, Richard M. – Journal of Outcome Measurement, 1998
Restrictions due to loss of freedom in estimation, the targeting of the instrument, and the presence of misfit in the data were studied through simulation as factors that influence the asymptotic standard errors for person measures. The underestimation of the observed standard deviation of ability in simulated data is discussed. (SLD)

Peer reviewedWang, Wen-chung; Wilson, Mark; Adams, Raymond J. – Journal of Outcome Measurement, 1998
Another Rasch approach to the measurement of change, the multidimensional random coefficient multinomial logit model (MRCML), is proposed. The MRCML model can be applied to polytomous items and the investigation of variations in item difficulties. Some simulation studies demonstrate good parameter recovery for the MRCML model under various testing…

Peer reviewedChen, Ssu-Kuang; Hou, Liling; Dodd, Barbara G. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1998
A simulation study was conducted to investigate the application of expected a posteriori (EAP) trait estimation in computerized adaptive tests (CAT) based on the partial credit model and compare it with maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). Results show the conditions under which EAP and MLE provide relatively accurate estimation in CAT. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adaptive Testing, Comparative Analysis, Computer Assisted Testing, Estimation (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedLucas, Keith B.; Lidstone, John G. – Evaluation Research in Education, 2000
Describes experiences teaching ethical issues in the conduct of research over several semesters using a simulation of research into obedience by S. Milgram in the early 1960s. Describes students' reactions to the simulation at emotional and intellectual levels and discusses the ethical dilemma these reactions have created for teachers…
Descriptors: Ethical Instruction, Ethics, Graduate Students, Graduate Study
Peer reviewedLindenberger, Ulman; Bates, Paul B. – Human Development, 1995
Calls for a coalition of different research methods and strategies to better understand learning and development. Describes two such strategies: (1) testing-the-limits decomposing age-graded differences in upper limits of plasticity; and (2) experimental simulation of development, a coordinated sequence of theory-guided research steps. Both…
