Chang, Hua-Hua; Qian, Jiahe; Yang, Zhiliang – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2001
Proposed a refinement, based on the stratification of items developed by D. Weiss (1973), of the computerized adaptive testing item selection procedure of H. Chang and Z. Ying (1999). Simulation studies using an item bank from the Graduate Record Examination show the benefits of the new procedure. (SLD)

Jones, Terry; Cason, Carolyn L.; Mancini, Mary E. – Journal of Professional Nursing, 2002
Registered nurses (n=368) participated in a skills recredentialing program in which competencies were assessed by a knowledge test and performance test under simulated conditions and evaluator ratings in actual patient-care situations. No significant differences in results between the simulated and actual conditions support the validity of the…

Muraki, Eiji – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1999
Extended an Item Response Theory (IRT) method for detection of differential item functioning to the partial credit model and applied the method to simulated data using a stepwise procedure. Then applied the stepwise DIF analysis based on the multiple-group partial credit model to writing trend data from the National Assessment of Educational…

Varnell, Sherri P.; Murray, David M.; Baker, William L. – Evaluation Review, 2001
Studied the analytic problems associated with a design in which one identifiable group is allocated to each treatment condition and members of these groups are measured to assess the intervention. Results from a simulation study underscore the analytic problems associated with these quasi-experimental or group-randomized designs. (SLD)

Mattler, Uwe – Cognitive Psychology, 2005
When participants use cues to prepare for a likely stimulus or a likely response, reaction times are facilitated by valid cues but prolonged by invalid cues. In studies on combined expectancy effects, two cues give information regarding two dimensions of the forthcoming task. When the two cues consist of two separable stimuli their effects are…

Fan, Xitao; Fan, Xiaotao – Structural Equation Modeling: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2005
This article illustrates the use of the SAS system for Monte Carlo simulation work in structural equation modeling (SEM). Data generation procedures for both multivariate normal and nonnormal conditions are discussed, and relevant SAS codes for implementing these procedures are presented. A hypothetical example is presented in which Monte Carlo…

Maiti, Alakes; Samanta, G. P. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2005
This paper reports on studies of the deterministic and stochastic behaviours of a predator-prey system with prey-dependent response function. The first part of the paper deals with the deterministic analysis of uniform boundedness, permanence, stability and bifurcation. In the second part the reproductive and mortality factors of the prey and…

Frack, Susan; Blanchard, Scott Alan – Science Scope, 2005
In this activity students will simulate how sedimentary rocks can be changed into metamorphic rocks by intense pressure. The materials needed are two small pieces of white bread, one piece of wheat bread, and one piece of a dark bread (such as pumpernickel or dark rye) per student, two pieces of waxed paper, scissors, a ruler, and heavy books.…

Moran, John R.; Simon, Kosali Ilayperuma – Journal of Human Resources, 2006
We use exogenous variation in Social Security payments created by the Social Security benefits notch to estimate how retirees' use of prescription medications responds to changes in their incomes. Using data from the 1993 Wave of the AHEAD, we obtain instrumental variables estimates of the income elasticity of prescription drug use that are…

Speer, Owner F.; Wengerter, Brian C.; Taylor, Ramona S. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
An experiment, in which students were given the opportunity to perform molecular dynamics simulations on a series of molecular liquids using the Amber suite of programs, is presented. They were introduced to both physical theories underlying classical mechanics simulations and to the atom-atom pair distribution function.

Lien, Mei-Ching; McCann, Robert S.; Ruthruff, Eric; Proctor, Robert W. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2005
The present study examined whether the central bottleneck, assumed to be primarily responsible for the psychological refractory period (PRP) effect, is intact, bypassed, or shifted in locus with ideomotor (IM)-compatible tasks. In 4 experiments, factorial combinations of IM- and non-IM-compatible tasks were used for Task 1 and Task 2. All…

Heit, Evan; Briggs, Janet; Bott, Lewis – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2004
The authors conducted 3 experiments addressing the issue of how observations and multiple sources of prior knowledge are put together in category learning. In Experiments 1 and 2, learning was faster for critical features, which were predictable on the basis of prior knowledge, than for filler features, and this advantage increased as more…

MacKinnon, David P.; Lockwood, Chondra M.; Williams, Jason – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 2004
The most commonly used method to test an indirect effect is to divide the estimate of the indirect effect by its standard error and compare the resulting z statistic with a critical value from the standard normal distribution. Confidence limits for the indirect effect are also typically based on critical values from the standard normal…

Jones, Gregory Todd; Hagtvedt, Reidar; Jones, Kari – Teaching Statistics: An International Journal for Teachers, 2004
In spite of the name, simple linear regression presents a number of conceptual difficulties, particularly for introductory students. This article describes a simulation tool that provides a hands-on method for illuminating the relationship between parameters and sample statistics.

Berthier, Neil E.; Rosenstein, Michael T.; Barto, Andrew G. – Psychological Review, 2005
Current models of psychological development rely heavily on connectionist models that use supervised learning. These models adapt network weights when the network output does not match the target outputs computed by some agent. The authors present a model of motor learning in which the child uses exploration to discover appropriate ways of…
