Hafdahl, Adam R. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2008
Monte Carlo studies of several fixed-effects methods for combining and comparing correlation matrices have shown that two refinements improve estimation and inference substantially. With rare exception, however, these simulations have involved homogeneous data analyzed using conditional meta-analytic procedures. The present study builds on…

Ayers, Elizabeth; Nugent, Rebecca; Dean, Nema – International Working Group on Educational Data Mining, 2009
A fundamental goal of educational research is identifying students' current stage of skill mastery (complete/partial/none). In recent years a number of cognitive diagnosis models have become a popular means of estimating student skill knowledge. However, these models become difficult to estimate as the number of students, items, and skills grows.…

Zhang, Zhiyong; Hamaker, Ellen L.; Nesselroade, John R. – Structural Equation Modeling: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2008
Four methods for estimating a dynamic factor model, the direct autoregressive factor score (DAFS) model, are evaluated and compared. The first method estimates the DAFS model using a Kalman filter algorithm based on its state space model representation. The second one employs the maximum likelihood estimation method based on the construction of a…

Enders, Craig K.; Tofighi, Davood – Structural Equation Modeling: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2008
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of misspecifying a growth mixture model (GMM) by assuming that Level-1 residual variances are constant across classes, when they do, in fact, vary in each subpopulation. Misspecification produced bias in the within-class growth trajectories and variance components, and estimates were…

Rupp, Andre A.; Templin, Jonathan – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2008
This article reports a study that investigated the effects of Q-matrix misspecifications on parameter estimates and misclassification rates for the deterministic-input, noisy "and" gate (DINA) model, which is a restricted latent class model for multiple classifications of respondents that can be useful for cognitively motivated diagnostic…

Peer reviewedMeulders, Michel; De Boeck, Paul; Van Mechelen, Iven – Psychometrika, 2003
Proposed a taxonomy of latent structure assumptions for probability matrix decomposition (PMD) that includes the original PMD model and a three-way extension of the multiple classification latent class model. Simulation study results show the usefulness of the taxonomy. (SLD)

Peer reviewedChiu, Christopher W. T.; Wolfe, Edward W. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2002
Developed a procedure for overcoming the computational and technological limitations of analyzing data with missing observations by extracting data from a sparsely filled data matrix into analyzable smaller subsets of data. Demonstrated the validity of this subdividing method using a Monte Carlo simulation. (SLD)

Peer reviewedBerge, Jos M. F. ten – Psychometrika, 1995
In Varimax rotation, permutations and reflections can give rise to the phenomenon that certain pairs of columns are consistently skipped in the iterative process, causing Varimax to terminate at a nonstationary point. This skipping phenomenon is demonstrated, and how to prevent it is described. (SLD)

Peer reviewedRaykov, Tenko; Marcoulides, George A.; Boyd, Jeremy – Structural Equation Modeling, 2003
Illustrates how commonly available structural equation modeling programs can be used to conduct some basic matrix manipulations and generate multivariate normal data with given means and positive definite covariance matrix. Demonstrates the outlined procedure. (SLD)

Peer reviewedTomas, Jose M.; Hontangas, Pedro M.; Oliver, Amparo – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 2000
Assessed two models for confirmatory factor analysis of multitrait-multimethod data through Monte Carlo simulation. The correlated traits-correlated methods (CTCM) and the correlated traits-correlated uniqueness (CTCU) models were compared. Results suggest that CTCU is a good alternative to CTCM in the typical multitrait-multimethod matrix, but…

Kaiser, Javaid – 1983
A simulation study was conducted to identify the best hot-deck variation to impute missing values. The three variations included in the study were the hot-deck random, the hot-deck sequential, and the hot-deck distance. The properties of these methods were investigated under three levels of the proportion of incomplete records and four levels…

Peer reviewedDe Champlain, Andre; Gessaroli, Marc E. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1998
Type I error rates and rejection rates for three-dimensionality assessment procedures were studied with data sets simulated to reflect short tests and small samples. Results show that the G-squared difference test (D. Bock, R. Gibbons, and E. Muraki, 1988) suffered from a severely inflated Type I error rate at all conditions simulated. (SLD)

Peer reviewedYoung, Forest; Baker, Robert F. – Psychometrika, 1975
The Individual Scaling with Individual Subjects (ISIS) procedure appears to be a viable implementation of an incomplete design for collecting real as well as simulated data. Applied to a multidimensional set of data, it reduced the number of judgments required by more than half and yet gave the same number of dimensions. (Author/RC)

Tucker's method of oblique congruence rotation is shown to be equivalent to a procedure by Meredith. This implies that Monte Carlo studies on congruence by Nesselroade, Baltes, and Labouvie and by Korth and Tucker are highly comparable. The problem of rotating two matrices orthogonally to maximal congruence is considered. (Author/CTM)
