Engstrom, Susanne; Gustafsson, Peter; Niedderer, Hans – International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, 2011
Understanding energy with a focus on sustainable development requires further knowledge beyond traditional conceptual understanding. This paper presents the result from one main investigation and two smaller follow-up studies. The main study (step 1) consists of an interpreting, iterative analysis of statements made by experts on contents for…

Martinus, Theresa; Melson, Ambrose John; Davies, John Booth; Mclaughlin, Ann – Drugs: Education, Prevention & Policy, 2012
Aim: To report baseline findings and discuss their implications for the transferability of the predominantly American "Social Norms" approach to alcohol misuse prevention to a UK (Scottish) secondary school setting. Design, setting, participants and measurement: Baseline data from a 3-year control case study are reported here, and data…

Ayas, Alipasa; Ozmen, Haluk; Calik, Muammer – International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, 2010
The aim of the present study is to elicit students' understanding of the particulate nature of matter via a cross-age study ranging from secondary to tertiary educational levels. A questionnaire with five-item open-ended questions was administered to 166 students from the secondary to tertiary levels of education. In light of the findings, it can…

Kilinc, Ahmet; Stanisstreet, Martin; Boyes, Edward – International Journal of Environmental and Science Education, 2008
A questionnaire was used to explore the prevalence of ideas about global warming in Year 10 (age 15-16 years) school students in Turkey. The frequencies of individual scientific ideas and misconceptions about the causes, consequences and "cures" of global warming were identified. In addition, several general findings emerged from this…

Rowlands, Stuart; Graham, Ted; Berry, John – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1998
Reports on a small-scale investigation of student understanding of moments of forces to provide some indication as to the nature of intuitive ideas in this area. Results of the investigation suggest three stumbling blocks in the conceptual understanding of moment of forces. (Author/ASK)

Mariani, M. C.; Ogborn, Jon – International Journal of Science Education, 1991
Two questionnaires were given to 38 students (16-18 year olds), in which they were asked to classify a list of different conceptual entities by several ontological features. The results suggest the form of a fundamental "ontological space" and locate some scientific concepts in this space. (Author)

Hitt, Fernando – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1994
Summarizes the history of the mathematical idea of function and presents questionnaire data from (n=117) mathematics teachers. Results showed that teachers had a tendency to think only in terms of continuous functions, yet had little skill in constructing continuous functions. They scarcely considered discontinuous functions. (14 references) (MKR)

Boyes, E.; Stanisstreet, M. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1991
Combined free response questionnaire and interview procedure are used to probe students' ideas regarding how they believe they see both luminous and nonluminous objects and how they think they hear source of sound. From large sample of students studied (n=1901), prevalence of ideas in different age groups is compared, and progression can be seen.…

Saxena, A. B. – International Journal of Science Education, 1991
Using a paper-and-pencil test consisting of multiple-choice situational questions which also require reasoning for the choices made, common misconceptions in light were identified. It was found that most of the students understand the basic properties of light at a knowledge level but had difficulty applying these concepts in novel situations.…

Thomaz, Marilia F.; And Others – Physics Education, 1995
Describes a teaching model aimed at promoting conceptual change concerning heat and temperature. The model is used with teachers (n=2) and students (n=92) to explore its use as a professional development tool as well as a teaching strategy. Results indicate that the teaching model is effective in changing students' ideas and the approach resulted…

Galili, Igal – Research in Science Education, 1995
Investigated students' understanding of the concept of weightlessness and found it to be influenced by the confusion between the concepts of weight and gravitational force. The causal structure of students' knowledge presents a platform for interpreting students' alternative ideas about weight and related physical concepts, which could guide…

Konold, Clifford; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1993
Examined inconsistencies in secondary school students' reasoning about the probability concept of equally likely events. Results of two studies suggest that the number of students who understand the concept of independence is much lower than the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress results indicate. (Contains 22 references.) (MDH)

Hales, Loyde W.; McGrew, Robin R. – 1991
This study examined students' knowledge associated with AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) and attitudes toward AIDS patients in three remote rural Oregon school districts. Subjects were 139 females and 149 males in 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10 grades. The questionnaire used in the study was designed to obtain information concerning knowledge and…
