Friedler, Yael; McFarlane, Angela E. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1997
Presents a study that introduces data logging using portable computers as part of an investigative approach to science. Working with control and experimental classes of 14- and 16-year-olds, results suggest that data logging can have an impact on graphing skills at age 14 which is not necessarily repeatable at age 16. Fox, John N.; And Others – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1994
ExCELS is a program that supports teachers interested in the use of computer interfacing at the secondary school level. This paper describes an ExCEL-based course developed for science education majors, presents an overview of interface apparatus and how it is used in schools, and gives examples of experiments performed. Nguyen-Xuan, A.; Nicaud, Jean-Francois; Gelis, Jean-Michel – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1997
Presents a comparative study of the effects of feedback on students who learned to solve algebraic factorization problems in an intelligent learning environment. Concludes that when the same error comments were used in both experiments, similarities were observed in the learning paths of the respective student groups. Contains 41 references.…

Russo, Ruth – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1997
Discusses the potential of computers in teaching laboratories to spare the lives of animals; however, it is felt that in areas of physiology education, virtual labs are not as desirable a learning experience for advanced students as live animal labs. (Author/AIM)

Stratford, Steven J. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1997
Covers research conducted within the past 10 years on the topic of using computer models and simulations to aid science instruction at the precollege level. The research is categorized into three main areas: (1) students running preprogrammed simulations; (2) students creating dynamic models using modeling environments; and (3) students using…

Powers, Michael H. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1987
Resistance probes for the laboratory can be divided into two main categories: (1) those involving direct use of resistance; and (2) those involving an indirect use of resistance. Described are several applications of both types related to chemistry and physics. (RH)

Nicaise, Molly – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1997
Describes several exemplars of software that emulate and incorporate machine-supported aspects of cognitive apprenticeships in science and mathematics. Concludes with an evaluation of software against cognitively guided principles and with a summary of the difficulties associated with creating and implementing machine-supported apprenticeships.…

Travis, Betty; Lennon, Elizabeth – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1997
Reports on a pilot program studying the use of computer software to enhance spatial skills presumed to be related to success in calculus. Addresses the effects of such a program on female and minority students. Results indicated that the combined effects of the computer, drawing and drafting, and gender variables explained 31% of the variance in…

Germann, Paul J.; Barrow, Lloyd H. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1996
Provides the results of a survey of science teachers (n=635) regarding the status of computer use and professional development needs related to the use of computers in classrooms. Results indicate that 91% of the classrooms have computers. Professional development needs are categorized by groups: non/past users, novices, and users/experts. (DDR)
