Interactive Fiction as a Tool in Language Teaching
Ivan Fernández Peláez
Hispania, v107 n4 p419-424 2024
Digital narratives have been used to promote target language reading and writing as part of instructed second language teaching. These texts can help break the monotony of more traditional print material and get learners closer to the multimodal practices that are part of their everyday written interactions, including elements such as video, images, or emojis alongside the text (Buendgens-Kosten 2021). In this article, Ivan Fernández Peláez discusses the pedagogical possibilities of a specific form of digital narrative, namely, intertextual interactive fiction, and specifically, the affordances of the Twine software tool for Foreign Language instruction. Interactive fiction (IF) offers a large number of possibilities and opportunities for instructed foreign language learning, and Twine is an accessible tool that can be used with relative ease both by students and instructors for this type of game-story.
