Megan C. Connor; Jeffrey R. Raker – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2024
Despite institutional reform efforts to increase use of evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs) in undergraduate chemistry and STEM courses, didactic lecture remains the predominant mode of instruction. Research to inform these initiatives routinely focuses on drivers and barriers to EBIP adoption, with recent work investigating factors…

Shauna Schechtel; Amanda Bongers – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2024
A goal in chemistry education research and teaching is to make chemistry education inclusive to our diverse students. Ethnography is one approach that can support this goal, because it supports researchers and educators in questioning what is considered ordinary by exploring chemistry as a culture. By exploring chemistry as a culture, we can…

Prytz, Kjell – Physics Education, 2020
An alternative way of introducing magnetism at all levels of education is proposed. It is stressed that magnetism can be introduced through the interaction between current-carrying conductors giving the students, at the same time, the possibility to measure the magnetic permeability [mu][subscript o]. Focusing on currents instead of permanent…

McEvoy, James P. – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2020
Undergraduate biochemistry students frequently find the quantitative treatment of weak acids and bases troublesome. Given the p"K"[subscript a] of a weak acid "HA," for instance, many students struggle to calculate the pH of a solution of the conjugate base A[superscript -] at concentration "C," pH(A[superscript -],…

Yu, Ted H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2020
The author introduces the concept of the quantum volume into thermodynamics teaching. A new derivation of the basic part of the Sackur-Tetrode equation uses the microcanonical ensemble instead of the math-heavy canonical ensemble. Entropy diagrams, based on the binomial distribution, visualize the ratio between the quantum volume and system volume.
