Suchting, W. A. – Science and Education, 1997
Examines central parts from the first two papers in this journal by Peter Slezak criticizing the "sociology of scientific knowledge". Considers some of the main philosophical issues raised by sociologists of science. Contains 87 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Structures, Constructivism (Learning), Elementary Secondary Education

Webb, Paul; Boltt, Gill – Journal of Biological Education, 1990
Investigated is the ability of high school pupils and university students to answer questions based on relationships within food webs using sound ecological principles. Research methods used and the results of this study are discussed. (CW)
Descriptors: Biology, Cognitive Structures, College Science, Ecology

Wellington, Jerry; And Others – School Science Review, 1988
Presented are four research articles and staff development activities. Included are: an activity used to stimulate discussion of the issue of balanced science; a constructivist approach to teaching electric circuits; a science grading scheme; and a discussion of priorities in science education. (CW)

Veldhuis, G. Henry – Science Education, 1990
The nature of cluster analysis and dendograms, subjects, tasks, and results of this study are described. Categories for problems were based on assumptions about the methods used by novice and expert problem solvers in a physics context. (CW)
Descriptors: Classification, Cluster Analysis, Cognitive Structures, College Science

Heyworth, Rex M. – Chinese University Education Journal, 1989
Reports a study which identified different problem-solving strategies among Hong Kong high school chemistry students. Finds that student experts employed a recognition plus a working forwards strategy, whereas student novices attempted a means-end analysis to create a solution procedure. Comparisons were made with problem-solving in physics. (GG)

Hewson, Peter W.; Hewson, Mariana G. A'B. – Science Education, 1988
Analyzes the concept of teaching from various aspects. Reviews research on students' conceptions of natural phenomena, conceptual change, and teacher thinking. Suggests an appropriate conception of teaching science. (YP)

Smith, Mike U. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1992
Compares 7 biology faculty members, 9 genetic counselors, and 26 undergraduate students according to both expertise and problem-solving success within the domain of genetics. Findings are consistent with the hypothesis that as expertise is attained, the individual restructures knowledge into a framework based upon the critical dimensions which…

Otero, Jose T.; Campanario, Juan M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1990
Described are the comprehension monitoring abilities of science students when reading science textbooks. The incorrect use of schemata and the limiting influence of metacognitive abilities on the improvement of meaningful learning is discussed. (KR)

Okebukola, Peter Akinsola – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1990
Discussed is the relationship of concept-mapping by students to the meaningful learning of genetics and ecological concepts. The implications of these results for teacher education in biology are addressed. (KR)

Osborne, Margery D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1998
Argues that a teacher's practice reflects changing experiences, knowledge, values, and identities, and as such can be productively thought of as a site for learning as well as a site for expounding upon what is known. Suggests a vision for what constitutes effective practice different from that commonly held in science. Contains 33 references.…

Bischoff, Paul J.; Anderson, O. R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1998
Randomly selected high school students (n=13) who studied an ecology unit were interviewed, and narrative data analyzed for changes in knowledge schema. Data support the current theory that the amount and quality of prior knowledge substantially influence gains in new knowledge and are closely linked to a capacity to apply higher-order cognitive…

Robinson, William R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2000
Describes a study that investigated the relationship and development of fifth-grade students' conceptual ecologies of heat. Contends that relying on a single mode of assessing students' learning can lead to a restricted view of what they truly know. (WRM)

Newton, Douglas P.; Newton, Lynn D. – Educational Studies, 1999
Examines aspects of 10-year-old children's conceptions of understanding. Analyzes to what extent they (1) recognize understanding as a cohesive whole, (2) know when a descriptive understanding versus a causal understanding is expected, and (3) can distinguish between the types of causal understanding in science and history. Includes references and…

Fisher, Brian – School Science Review, 2001
Examines quantitative models in school physics, looking particularly at the degree to which they match the real world. Explores the positive aspects of a mismatch between models and real world conditions. (DDR)

Park, Jongwon; Kim, Ikgyun; Kim, Myunghwan; Lee, Moo – International Journal of Science Education, 2001
Identifies middle school and college students' prior ideas about electrostatic induction. Presented students with observational evidence that supported or refuted their own prior ideas in an interview format. Concludes that the Lakatosian rather than the Popperian view is more acceptable in understanding students' responses to conflicting…
