Attashani, Abdulrazik; Pesenti, Roberto A. – 1974
Reported is a study related to a Project on an Information Memory Model in which the performance of children living in two different cultures (Libyan and American) was compared on two problem solving tasks to investigate cultural differences in memory information processing. One task was the chemical bodies experiment studied by Piaget and…
Descriptors: Cognitive Measurement, Cognitive Processes, Cultural Differences, Educational Research
Peer reviewedMcGuire, Christine – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Discusses the use, types, and advantages of simulation activities in problem-solving instruction. Reviews a research study of simulation in medical education. (MLH)
Descriptors: Educational Research, Higher Education, Instruction, Learning Activities
Peer reviewedChristiansen, Gunnar – American Journal of Physics, 1978
Describes a concentrated course of one week duration in elementary computer physics. The purpose of it is to introduce computer physics and to show how to remove the traditional constraints on physics courses, and to gain insight into the solutions of complex problems using the computer. (GA)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Science, Course Descriptions, General Education
Peer reviewedSvendsen, E. Norby – Journal of Chemical Education, 1977
Presents a method for simplifying calculations in quantum chemistry by calculating molecular energy from the electrostatic theorem. (SL)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Energy, Higher Education
Peer reviewedSmith, Stanley G.; Chabay, Ruth – Journal of Chemical Education, 1977
Describes chemistry games included in the PLATO computer-generated graphics system developed at the University of Illinois to give students problem solving practice. (SL)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Programs
Peer reviewedBartlett, Albert A. – Physics Teacher, 1978
Presents part seven of a continuing presentation of exponential functions. Provided is an extension of the part six discussion, exponential population growth, to world population growth. (SL)
Descriptors: Growth Patterns, Mathematical Applications, Mathematics Education, Population Growth
Peer reviewedSchmid, G. Bruno – American Journal of Physics, 1977
Presents an operator which transforms quantum functions to solve problems of the stationary state wave functions for a particle and the motion and spreading of a Gaussian wave packet in uniform gravitational fields. (SL)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Mathematical Applications, Mechanics (Physics)
Peer reviewedGreenspan, Donald – American Journal of Physics, 1977
Presents a completely arithmetic development of Newtonian dynamics in which all classical conservation laws are valid and all equations are in forms amenable to high-speed digital computer computation. (SL)
Descriptors: College Science, Computers, Higher Education, Kinetics
Peer reviewedGray, C. G. – American Journal of Physics, 1978
Provides an introduction to Debye potentials and simplified derivations of the multipole expansions of electrodynamic fields. (SL)
Descriptors: College Science, Electromechanical Technology, Higher Education, Instructional Materials
Peer reviewedRowell, J. A.; Dawson, C. J. – Science Education, 1977
Questions Piagetian theory that dismisses the idea of accelerating cognitive development through classroom activities. (CP)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Concept Formation, Educational Research, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedWagner, Paul A.; Lucas, Christopher J. – Science Education, 1977
Advances the thesis that philosophical questioning should precede or accompany children's participation in science activities in the elementary grades. (CP)
Descriptors: Curriculum, Educational Philosophy, Elementary Education, Instruction
Peer reviewedShymansky, James A.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Investigated were relationships between student self perception and actual classroom behavior in problem solving situations of 201 elementary students. Results indicated students with positive self concept were more independent from teachers and peers. Dependance upon others by low self esteem students is more evident in higher grades. (SL)
Descriptors: Behavior, Educational Research, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science
Peer reviewedLunetta, Vincent N.; Cheng, Yeong-Jing – Science Education, 1987
Examines the utility of the ancient Chinese concept of Tai-chi as a model for interpreting complex contemporary issues in science education. Describes the model and suggests how it can be useful in understanding scientific phenomena and in guiding instruction. (ML)
Descriptors: Cultural Exchange, Foreign Countries, Instructional Improvement, Models
Peer reviewedThomson, Norman; Stewart, James – Journal of Biological Education, 1985
Explains an algorithm which details procedures for solving a broad class of genetics problems common to pre-college biology. Several flow charts (developed from the algorithm) are given with sample questions and suggestions for student use. Conclusions are based on the authors' research (which includes student interviews and textbook analyses).…

Peer reviewedFinegold, M.; Mass, R. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1985
Good problem solvers and poor problem solvers in advanced physics (N=8) were significantly different in their ability in translating, planning, and physical reasoning, as well as in problem solving time; no differences in reliance on algebraic solutions and checking problems were noted. Implications for physics teaching are discussed. (DH)
