Austin, Sam M.; Gilbert, K. E. – American Journal of Physics, 1973
Twenty-five students were chosen randomly from a larger class and were taught in a self-paced format. Their performance was compared with the students in the large lecture-recitation section through a common final examination and a retest given two months later. The self-paced students did substantially better in both cases. (DF)

Swetman, T. P. – American Journal of Physics, 1972
To communicate the relevance and excitement of science activity to students, the use of more imaginative, and even openly speculative, case studies in physics courses is suggested. Some useful examples are Magnetic Monopoles, Constants, Black Holes, Antimatter, Zero Mass Particles, Tachyons, and the Bootstrap Hypothesis. (DF)
