Eddy, John K.; Glass, Arnold L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1981
Presents study performed to clarify the role that imagery plays in sentence understanding. Results show that reading selectively interferes with comprehension of high-imagery sentences and demonstrates that sentence comprehension is not a process that is independent of the decoding stage. (Author/BK)

Peer reviewedTiu, Rolando D., Jr.; Thompson, Lee A.; Lewis, Barbara A. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2003
This study tested the role of visual processing speed and IQ in reading with 124 children either with or without reading disability. Results indicated that processing speed explains a significant amount of variance in reading comprehension, as does IQ. Path analyses indicated that the effect of IQ on reading is partially mediated by decoding in…

Peer reviewedWashington, Valerie M. – Teacher Educator, 1988
A technique for teaching children to gather new facts and ideas or to confirm previously selected information for the purpose of writing reports is described. Semantic mapping, a model for enhancing passage comprehension, is an entire process of reading, recalling, notetaking, organizing ideas, and paragraph writing. (JD)
Descriptors: Advance Organizers, Decoding (Reading), Elementary Education, Notetaking
Peer reviewedStothard, Susan E.; Hulme, Charles – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1992
Investigates comprehension problems of children whose decoding skills are normal but whose reading comprehension skills are poor. Concludes that working memory processes are not a major causal factor in the creation of the comprehension difficulties identified in these poor comprehenders. (RS)
Descriptors: Decoding (Reading), Elementary Education, Memory, Reading Achievement
Peer reviewedHenshaw, Ann – Educational Research, 1992
Three passages that differed in accessibility but not linguistic difficulty were read by 52 11-year-old remedial readers, focusing on words read correctly. Readers were able to use linguistic cues to solve difficult words. Context dependency was affected both by decoding ability and text accessibility. (SK)
Descriptors: Context Clues, Decoding (Reading), Elementary Education, Miscue Analysis
Peer reviewedNaslund, Jan Carol; Samuels, S. Jay – Reading and Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties, 1992
Debates the question of how automaticity in reading develops. Suggests that the traditional view of automaticity development (a result of limited attentional capacity) does not adequately describe the process. Discusses comparisons of alternative views of automaticity and the traditional view. (RS)
Descriptors: Beginning Reading, Decoding (Reading), Elementary Education, High Risk Students
Peer reviewedSimpson, Greg B.; And Others – Journal of Research in Reading, 1994
Investigates context effects for words with more than one meaning. Finds that younger children (third graders) were more sensitive to the sentence context in which an ambiguous word appears, whereas the processing of older children (sixth graders) was determined more by the relative frequencies of the word meanings. (RS)

Peer reviewedShankweiler, Donald; Lundquist, Eric; Katz, Leonard; Stuebing, Karla K.; Fletcher, Jack M.; Brady, Susan; Fowler, Anne; Dreyer, Lois G.; Marchione, Karen E.; Shaywitz, Sally E.; Shaywitz, Bennett A. – Scientific Studies of Reading, 1999
Finds high correlations between word reading and nonword reading; and skill in word identification was almost inseparable from the phonologically analytic decoding process that is tapped by nonword reading. Notes differences in reading comprehension were closely associated with differences in decoding skill. (SC)

Peer reviewedShankweiler, Donald – Scientific Studies of Reading, 1999
Suggests placing phonological awareness in the context of the problems of reading and the symptoms of reading disability. Considers how reading builds on the foundations of the child's development of primary language. Contains eight assertions about the development of reading and its difficulties. (SC)
Descriptors: Beginning Reading, Decoding (Reading), Early Childhood Education, Language Acquisition
Peer reviewedNation, Kate; Snowling, Margaret J. – Applied Psycholinguistics, 2000
Using a word order correction paradigm, this study assessed syntactic awareness skills in children with good and poor reading comprehension, matched for age, decoding skill, and nonverbal ability. Poor comprehenders performed less well than normal readers, and the performance of both groups was influenced by the syntactic complexity and semantic…

Peer reviewedSeigneuric, Alix; Ehrlich, Marie-France; Oakhill, Jane V.; Yuill, Nicola M. – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2000
Studies the relationship between working memory capacity and reading comprehension in fourth-grade children and the nature of the working memory resources involved in reading comprehension. Shows that working memory capacity was a direct predictor of reading comprehension when contrasted with vocabulary and decoding skills. Discusses the reasons…

Peer reviewedAarnoutse, Cor; Van Leeuwe, Jan; Voeten, Marinus; Oud, Han – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2001
Investigates the development of decoding (efficiency), reading comprehension, vocabulary and spelling during the elementary school years. Determines the differences between poor, average and good performers with regard to the development of these skills. Finds clear seasonal effects for reading comprehension, vocabulary and spelling, but the…

Rasinski, Timothy; Padak, Nancy – Reading and Writing Quarterly, 2004
Literacy scholars appear to have reached consensus that a balanced approach to reading instruction holds the greatest promise for improving reading achievement among students. Following the lead of the National Reading Panel (2000), curricular manifestations of a balanced reading program include instructional components in phonics or word…

Nation, Kate; Clarke, Paula; Wright, Barry; Williams, Christine – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2006
This study investigated reading skills in 41 children with autism spectrum disorder. Four components of reading skill were assessed: word recognition, nonword decoding, text reading accuracy and text comprehension. Overall, levels of word and nonword reading and text reading accuracy fell within average range although reading comprehension was…

Trainin, Guy; Wilson, Kathryn – Online Submission, 2010
Reading First has been implemented in Nebraska since the 2004-5 academic year. In two rounds of funding and participation, schools have transformed the way they trained their teachers, measured student progress, and taught. This transformation is one of the hardest tasks in education and it has taken the considerable dedication of school personnel…
