Student Perceptions of Interaction Strategies within an Online Military Leadership Course
Moon, Dorothy Duria
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
In 2015, the United States Air Force (USAF) transitioned the leadership course from in-residence to online. The problem under investigation in this study is the new curriculum does not meet students' learned leadership competency expectations due to the limited methods of student interaction. Student perceptions were examined using an exploratory case study method and an online, anonymous survey. Nine active-duty Air Force members, who completed the course in 2017, participated in this study. The research questions that led this study were (a) What is the perception of NCODL learners on the impact of the curriculum on learner interactions? and (b) What is the perception of NCODL learners on the impact of learner interactions on select Air Force leadership competencies exhibited by learners? The leadership course contained a variety of student-material interactions but lacked any student or teacher interaction. While the material helped participants to understand the basic definitions of the leadership competencies, the interaction experience was poor. The participants reported value in student and teacher interaction. Together, these findings suggest that the concurrent use of various methods of student interaction might greatly improve the student experience. There is an opportunity for future researchers to ascertain how various interactions may improve leader development.
