Instructional Leadership Experiences of Elementary Assistant Principals
ChiYanna Young
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro
I designed this study to explore elementary assistant principals' perspectives of their roles as instructional leaders while fulfilling other administrative duties typically associated with the assistant principal position. I aimed to build on existing research on the role of contemporary elementary assistant principals as instructional leaders. My research question was: "What are the perspectives and experiences of elementary assistant principals as instructional leaders?" Using a basic qualitative research approach (Merriam & Tisdell, 2016) as my methodology, I sought to investigate the perceptions of six elementary school assistant principals regarding their instructional leadership practices via personal interviews. The instructional leadership model from the Wallace Foundation (2013) served as my conceptual framework. I conducted my study in Marshall School District (a pseudonym). I used semi-structured open-ended virtual interviews as my primary study instrument for the collection of data. I addressed trustworthiness in the study by using member checks, peer debriefing, and a reflexivity journal. I presented my findings in the form of individual profiles of each participant. I also identified four themes that emerged across all the profiles, including the challenges of time management and the importance of principal support. Implications of my study include the need to offer ongoing assistance and mentorship to assistant principals, to provide focused training, and to implement systemic support to enable assistant principals to become proficient instructional leaders, ultimately leading to enhanced educational practices and student achievement. I close by offering recommendations for practice and research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
