Allen, Bradford D. – 1994
A central theme of Mandler's theory of emotion is that the interruption of a cognitive activity sets the stage for emotion. Mandler's theory is particularly applicable to mathematical problem-solving experiences. Mandler's linking of emotion to perception also makes emotion during problem solving an excellent candidate to be modeled with…

Schoenfeld, Alan H. – 1979
Two questions are dealt with: (1) Can those strategies or behaviors which enable experts to solve problems well be characterized, and (2) Can students be trained to use such strategies? A problem-solving course for college students is described and the model on which the course is based is outlined in an attempt to answer these questions. The…

Scott, Dana S. – 1968
This project endeavored to develop a high school course for use in the classroom and for use with a computer-controlled system of programed lessons. Many difficulties such as those in the display and control of figures were encountered in trying to organize and prepare the material for the computer. The conclusion reached was that the solution to…

Bana, J. P.; Nelson, D. – Alberta Journal of Educational Research, 1977
The central purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of distractions in nonverbal problems on the problem solving behavior and performance of young children (grades 1-3) in 6 schools (N=360). Results indicated 66 percent of the subjects were distracted by irrelevant spatial-numerical or color attribute uses. (JC)

Kolata, Gina – Science, 1985
To determine how hard it is for computers to solve problems, researchers have classified groups of problems (polynomial hierarchy) according to how much time they seem to require for their solutions. A difficult and complex proof is offered which shows that a combinatorial approach (using Boolean circuits) may resolve the problem. (JN)
