Daugherty, Jenny; Mentzer, Nathan – Journal of Technology Education, 2008
This synthesis paper discusses the research exploring analogical reasoning, the role of analogies in the engineering design process, and educational applications for analogical reasoning. Researchers have discovered that analogical reasoning is often a fundamental cognitive tool in design problem solving. Regarding the possible role of analogical…

Middleman, Stanley – Chemical Engineering Education, 1983
Discusses the evolution of a set of research programs (dealing with the removal of liquid contaminants from surfaces) used to introduce graduate students to methods of design, evaluation, and modification within the context of a larger research program. Stresses the simultaneity and interaction of theoretical and experimental studies. (JM)

Shahan, James C.; De Jong, Paul S. – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 1990
The results of an experiment in teaching engineering graphics using the traditional lecture-homework-laboratory technique are compared to a newer lecture homework proposal. Although the newer method reduces professor-student contact, it may prove to be as effective as the older method requiring laboratory instruction. (KR)

Chen, Daniel M. – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 1990
Presented is a proposed formula for determining the bearing angle and the slope angle for the line of intersection using the strike and dip angles of two given plane segments. Included is the development of the formula and three example problems. (KR)

Vance, Judy M.; Jenison, Rollie D. – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 1990
Two graphics interface packages, PHIGS and HOOPS, are examined. A comparison of the two packages is made in light of the Iowa State University College of Engineering's need for educational software. Conclusions based on programing experience using both PHIGS and HOOPS are presented. (KR)

Fleisher, Paul; Ziegler, Donald – Teacher Ideas Press, 2006
For more than twenty years, the Richmond, Virginia Public Schools' program for gifted students has conducted an interscholastic competition similar to the nationally known competition, Destination Imagination. In the featured contest of this yearly event, teams of five students present solutions to engineering problems that they have worked on for…

Roth, Wolff-Michael – Research in Science Education, 1995
Investigated problem- and solution-related activity of (n=28) fourth and fifth graders in ill-defined and open-ended settings. In the course of their negotiations, students demonstrated an uncanny competence to frame and reframe problems and solutions and to decide courses of actions of different complexities in spite of the ambiguous nature of…

Woods, Donald R.; Kourti, Theodora; Wood, Philip E.; Sheardown, Heather; Crowe, Cameron M.; Dickson, James M. – Chemical Engineering Education, 2002
Carries on from an article about the context for assessment of problem solving skills. Describes other forms of evidence in problem solving skill besides the options given in the previous article. Lists eight forms of evidence related more directly to the problem solving process. Analyzes the relationship among some of these suggested forms of…

Copperman, Elana; Beeri, Catriel; Ben-Zvi, Nava – Innovations in Education and Teaching International, 2007
This paper introduces various visual models for the analysis and description of learning processes. The models analyse learning on two levels: the dynamic level (as a process over time) and the functional level. Two types of model for dynamic modelling are proposed: the session trace, which documents a specific learner in a particular learning…

Jong, I. C.; Rogers, B. G. – Engineering Education, 1989
The main advantage of using these concepts lies in the reduction of algebraic work involved in solving certain dynamics problems. A brief analytical treatment of the acceleration center and a description of a virtual work principle for equipollent systems in the kinetics of rigid bodies are provided. (MVL)
