Zeilberger, Doron; Todd, Philip – Mathematics Teacher, 1981
An unusual way of using the long multiplication algorithm to solve problems is presented. It is conceptually harder, since it involves negative numbers but is easier to perform once mastered, since the size of the multiplication table required is smaller than the standard one. (MP)

McDonald, James R.; And Others – Mathematics Teacher, 1981
Three teaching ideas are presented: (1) the use of "factor cards" to teach the concept of greatest common factor; (2) examples and tools used in student graphing in three dimensions; and (3) ways to use cuisenaire rods, cubes, and flats to discover binomial expansions. (MP)

Sloyer, C. W. – Mathematics Teacher, 1980
The use of the hand-held calculator for introducing geometric growth is illustrated. The activity is designed for secondary school mathematics students. (MP)

Jencks, Stanley M.; And Others – Arithmetic Teacher, 1980
Children's difficulties remembering correct algorithms for operations with fractions are traced to difficulties in the instructional sequence. Many teachers "teach mistakes" by failing to provide sufficient referents for their pupils. (MP)

Ball, Derek – Mathematics Teaching, 1980
Tesselations and n-dimensional geometry problems are reviewed. The author discusses possible models which could be used to approach and understand these special aspects of geometry. (MP)

Mathematics Teacher, 1981
Three teaching ideas are presented: a way to solve problems based on the attitude to the hypotenuse in a right triangle, some interesting applications of percentages in determining pay raises, and a flowchart guide for reducing polynomials. (MP)

Smith, Susan M. – Mathematics Teacher, 1981
Activities geared to reinforcing the skills involved in solving linear equations are given. The material is prepared on worksheets designed for duplication. Student use of calculators is suggested, and the material can aid in promoting mental computation and estimation. (MP)

Wheatley, Charlotte L. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1980
A study of 46 sixth graders designed to compare the problem-solving performance of pupils using calculators with that of students not using calculators is reported. The argument that calculator availability facilitates problem solving is supported. (MP)

Piele, Donald T. – Creative Computing, 1979
This article gives examples of the way the Apple II microcomputer was used with a sixth-grade class in Kenosha, Wisconsin. (MK)
Descriptors: Computer Oriented Programs, Computers, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
Bell, Max S. – Prospects: Quarterly Review of Education, 1979
Explains how a new approach to mathematics education which emphasizes problem solving and interrelationships among various disciplines can help students use mathematics in problem solving in everyday and working lives. (DB)

Findell, Carol – Journal of Education, 1996
Reviews the past 50 years of mathematics education in the United States and examines past and present reforms. The mathematics education community is trying to develop a vision of mathematics that will serve in the next century. Current curriculum materials based on these reforms present students with relevant problems to solve and require…
