Melancon, Jan G. – Math Notebook, 1985
Discusses the development of visual thinking in students. Also presents a strategy that incorporates visualization exercises within the framework of traditional mathematics. The technique appears successful for students studying geometry, fractions, and problem solving. Visualization abilities increase understanding and therefore give students…

Peer reviewedHedren, Rolf – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1985
Studied for three years were eight Swedish classes with pupils aged 10-12 using calculators whenever they could be of use, along with experimental textbooks. The experimental classes were as competent as control classes in mental arithmetic and calculations with simple algorithms, and had better understanding of numbers and problem solving. (MNS)

Peer reviewedFennema, Elizabeth; Tartre, Lindsay A. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1985
Investigated was how girls and boys who were discrepant in their spatial and verbal performance used spatial visualization skills in solving word problems and fraction problems. It was concluded that low spatial visualization skill may be more debilitating to girls' mathematical problem solving than to boys'. (MNS)

Peer reviewedHudson, H. T. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
Determined if providing feedback to students had any impact on the correlation between performance in physics and a test of simple, mechanistic mathematics skills. Also determined if students who drop out of the physics course demonstrated any identifiable difference in performance on tests involving a variety of reasoning and problem-solving…

Peer reviewedGibb, Allan A. – Mathematics and Computer Education, 1984
A brief overview is given of the part of meteorology which deals with the circulation of the atmosphere. This is followed by eight illustrative application problems for mathematics classes. (MNS)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Higher Education, Mathematical Applications, Mathematics Instruction
Peer reviewedHampel, Paul J. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1984
A program for a number of guessing logic games, written in APPLESOFT, is first given. Then four computer-related terms are defined. (MNS)
Descriptors: Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Software, Educational Games, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedGibb, Allan A. – Mathematics and Computer Education, 1984
This second part of a two-part article highlights some mathematics involved in the study of meteorology. Examples are given of the application of mathematics to the study of the atmosphere, with three problems discussed. (MNS)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Higher Education, Mathematical Applications, Mathematics Instruction
Piemonte, Charles – Curriculum Review, 1983
Describes a new theoretical model of the learning process produced by the computer's strict reliance on procedure and its unique methods for managing data. The implications of this model for mathematics learning are illustrated through an experimental paradigm comparing the problem-solving skills of an expert and a novice. (MBR)

Peer reviewedAbelson, Harold – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1976
Arguing that computers can be used to improve not only the delivery of undergraduate mathematics courses, but also their content, the author discusses several broad areas in which computers might improve the undergraduate curriculum. (SD)

Hogan, Bob – Crystal Springs Books, 2005
Using this four CD-ROM disc set, teachers can have their very own math problem solving mentor as a leading expert in Singapore Math guides them through a lively presentation, working through math problems and explaining how Singapore has become the world's leading method in math. The expert's explanation of how to use Singapore's model-drawing…

Weber, Keith – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
The purpose of this paper is to offer a framework for categorizing and describing the different types of processes that undergraduates use to construct proofs. Based on 176 observations of undergraduates constructing proofs collected over several studies, I describe three qualitatively different ways that undergraduates use to construct proofs. In…

Burns, Marilyn – 2000
This book helps teachers examine how children learn mathematics, develop a positive attitude toward and an interest in mathematics, teach mathematics with problem solving as the primary focus, understand the elements of a comprehensive mathematics curriculum, and establish a classroom environment that supports children's learning of mathematics.…

McClain, Kay; Cobb, Paul; Bowers, Janet – 1998
This paper discusses an approach to the study of algorithms which values students' construction of nonstandard algorithms but also emphasizes the essential roles of the teacher and instructional activities in supporting the development of students' numerical reasoning. Episodes are presented from a 3rd grade classroom in which a 9-week teaching…

McClain, Kay; Cobb, Paul; Gravemeijer, Koeno – 2000
This paper describes how one group of students came to reason about data while developing statistical understandings related to exploratory data analysis. Episodes taken from a 7th grade classroom in which a 12-week teaching experiment was conducted are presented. One of the goals of the teaching experiment was to investigate ways to support…

Anderson, Jennifer M.; Olson, Jennifer S.; Wrobel, Margaret L. – 2001
This action research describes a program for improving mathematical problem solving skills. The targeted population consisted of first grade students in a transient, middle class community as well as third and sixth grade students from a growing, middle to upper class in Illinois. The concerns of problem solving were documented through teacher…
