Wells, David – Mathematics in School, 1985
Portions of the Cockcroft Report which seem confusing are discussed. The connections among problems, applications, and investigations are considered in sections on being a mathematician; open is in the mind; assumptions, rules and patterns; and learning not to be anxious. (MNS)

Darch, Craig; And Others – Journal of Educational Research, 1984
An explicit strategy method developed from a composite of basal arithmetic texts was used for mathematics problem-solving instruction for a group of fourth graders. Posttest results were positive. Implications for teaching mathematics problem solving to low performing students are discussed. (Author/DF)

Lovie, Patricia; Lovie, A. D. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1976
Research on college students' ability to estimate means and variances for sets of data showed that they were more able to estimate means, and that various characteristics of the data (e.g. magnitude of numbers) influenced the accuracy of estimates. (SD)

Blankenship, Colleen S.; Lovitt, Thomas C. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1976
The effect of varying problem vocabulary on students' accuracy and speed in computing story problems was investigated. Daily performance of seven learning disabled boys was measured over an 11 month period. Results showed problems containing extraneous information were computed more slowly and less accurately than any other class of problems. (DT)

Carpenter, Thomas P.; Franke, Megan Loef; Levi, Linda – 2003
This book is designed to help teachers understand children's intuitive problem solving and computational processes and to figure out how to use that knowledge to enhance students' understanding of arithmetic. This book provides numerous examples of classroom dialogues that indicate how algebraic ideas emerge in children's thinking and what…

Leikin, Roza – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
This paper analyses changes in the quality of a mathematical task as a result of its reformulation from a proof mode into an inquiry-based mode. The task is borrowed from the reformulation assignment given to the in-service teachers. The analysis of the task is based on implementation of the task with pre-service teachers. Through the lens of the…

Tatsis, Konstantinos; Koleza, Eugenia – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
The analysis of interaction among students is becoming very important in mathematics education, especially among the scholars who view knowledge as socially constructed and negotiated. One of the features of human interaction is the roles that people perform while interacting. Using a symbolic interactionist perspective, we analyzed the evolution…
