Colon-Berlingeri, Migdalisel; Burrowes, Patricia A. – CBE - Life Sciences Education, 2011
Incorporation of mathematics into biology curricula is critical to underscore for undergraduate students the relevance of mathematics to most fields of biology and the usefulness of developing quantitative process skills demanded in modern biology. At our institution, we have made significant changes to better integrate mathematics into the…

De Luca, R.; Ganci, S. – European Journal of Physics, 2011
We propose an analytic solution to the problem of the mechanical paradox consisting of a sphere rolling upwards on two diverging inclined guides as devised by Gardner. The presence of an unstable equilibrium point is highlighted and the analytic solution is found by means of elementary calculus concepts. (Contains 4 figures and 3 footnotes.)

Alavi, H. S.; Dillenbourg, P. – IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, 2012
We describe an ambient awareness tool, named "Lantern", designed for supporting the learning process in recitation sections, (i.e., when students work in small teams on the exercise sets with the help of tutors). Each team is provided with an interactive lamp that displays their work status: the exercise they are working on, if they have…

Deakin, Michael A. B. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2010
Many familiar household objects (such as sausages) involve the maximization of a volume under geometric constraints. A flexible but inextensible membrane bounds a volume which is to be filled to capacity. In the case of the sausage, a full analytic solution is here provided. Other related but more difficult problems seem to demand approximate…

Cory, Beth – Mathematics Teacher, 2010
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' (NCTM's) (2000) Connections Standard states that students should "recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas; understand how mathematical ideas interconnect ...; [and] recognize and apply mathematics in contexts outside of mathematics" (p. 354). This article presents an in-depth…

Wu, Yan – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2009
A closed form solution for the trigonometric integral [integral]sec[superscript 2k+1]xdx, k=0,1,2,..., is presented in this article. The result will fill the gap in another trigonometric integral [integral]sec[superscript 2m+1] x tan[superscript 2n]xdx, which is neglected by most of the calculus textbooks due to its foreseeable unorthodox solution…

Gardenier, George H.; Gui, Feng; Demas, James N. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2011
Complex error propagation is reduced to formula and data entry into a Mathcad worksheet or an Excel spreadsheet. The Mathcad routine uses both symbolic calculus analysis and Monte Carlo methods to propagate errors in a formula of up to four variables. Graphical output is used to clarify the contributions to the final error of each of the…

Sokolowski, Andrzej; Yalvac, Bugrahan; Loving, Cathleen – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2011
"Use of mathematical representations to model and interpret physical phenomena and solve problems is one of the major teaching objectives in high school math curriculum" [National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), "Principles and Standards for School Mathematics", NCTM, Reston, VA, 2000]. Commonly used pre-calculus textbooks provide a…

Yoder, Garett; Cook, Jerry – Journal of STEM Education: Innovations and Research, 2014
The Department of Physics at EKU [Eastern Kentucky University] with support from the National Science Foundations Course Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement Program has successfully converted our entire introductory physics sequence, both algebra-based and calculus-based courses, to an activity-based format where laboratory activities,…

Henry, Valerie – PRIMUS, 2010
In this article, we propose to introduce the differential of a function through a non-classical way, lying on hyperreals and infinite microscopes. This approach is based on the developments of nonstandard analysis, wants to be more intuitive than the classical one and tries to emphasize the functional and geometric aspects of the differential. In…

Popelka, Susan R. – Mathematics Teacher, 2011
Tiny prisms in reflective road signs and safety vests have interesting geometrical properties that can be discussed at any level of high school mathematics. At the beginning of the school year, the author teaches a unit on these reflective materials in her precalculus class so that students can review and strengthen their geometry and trigonometry…

Lin, Shih-Yin; Singh, Chandralekha – Physical Review Special Topics - Physics Education Research, 2011
In this study, we examine introductory physics students' ability to perform analogical reasoning between two isomorphic problems which employ the same underlying physics principles but have different surface features. Three hundred sixty-two students from a calculus-based and an algebra-based introductory physics course were given a quiz in the…

Ding, Jiu; Wang, Zizhong – College Mathematics Journal, 2009
Using calculus, we explore the long term dynamical behavior of exponential functions under iteration for all initial points.

Delice, Ali; Sevimli, Eyup – Educational Sciences: Theory and Practice, 2010
Using different representations and having flexibility of transition between representations throughout the definite integral problem-solving process are thought to be effective on the development of conceptual understanding and students' performance. The study aims at considering the effects of representations used in the definite integral on…

Bowman, Silas – PRIMUS, 2010
This project served as a capstone event for the United States Military Academy sophomore Calculus II course. This multi-disciplinary problem-solving exercise motivated the link between math and biology and many other fields of study. The seven-lesson block of instruction was developed to show students how mathematics play a role in every…
