Billings, Andrew – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1979
Compared communicational interactions of maritally distressed and nondistressed couples engaged in conflict resolution tasks. Distressed couples made significantly more negative cognitive and problem-solving acts. Distressed couples evidenced more reciprocity of negative communication as compared with nondistressed couples. Relationships of these…

Singer, Harry; Donlan, Dan – Reading Research Quarterly, 1982
Implies that instruction can help students improve in reader-based processing of text and that strategies for making schema-general questions story-specific are necessary for processing, storing, and retrieving information from complex short stories. (AEA)

Meyer, Ruth Ann – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1981
This study compared good and poor fourth-grade problem solvers on a battery of 19 "reference" tests for verbal, induction, numerical, word fluency, memory, perceptual speed, and simple visualization abilities. Results suggest verbal, numerical, and especially induction abilities are important to successful mathematical problem solving.…

Zur, Mordecai; Silverman, Fredrick L. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1980
Increasing the amount of problem-solving training in the preservice education of mathematics teachers is promoted. Such problems should be designed to help preservice teachers acquire an "open search" frame of mind, according to the authors. (MP)

Brown, Jerry W.; Service, Allan L. – CAUSE/EFFECT, 1980
Shortcomings of management information systems in managerial functions are often attributed to differences between "left brain" activities performed by machines and "right brain" activities performed in decision making. It is argued that academic management information systems should incorporate and recognize both kinds of activity. (MSE)

Wheatley, Charlotte L. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1980
A study of 46 sixth graders designed to compare the problem-solving performance of pupils using calculators with that of students not using calculators is reported. The argument that calculator availability facilitates problem solving is supported. (MP)

Wertsch, J. V. – Human Development, 1979
Deals with some of the confusions that have arisen due to inaccurate translation and misunderstanding of Vygotsky's general theoretical framework. Also discusses how social interaction at the level of interpsychological functioning can lead to independent problem solving at the intrapsychological level. (Author/MP)

West, Robin L.; And Others – Human Development, 1978
Studies the effects of perceptual salience on performance in problems requiring the coordination of information. Subjects were groups of children, younger adults, and older adults. For each of the age groups, those problems containing the most salient information were solved faster and more accurately than problems containing the least salient…

Svenson, Ola; And Others – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1976
In this study retrospective verbal reports were collected in order to study cognitive processes activated when solving simple additions. The research was devoted to a revision and validation of the earlier presented process model (Svenson 1975) by using retrospective verbal reports as a complement to the response latencies analyzed earlier.…

Davis, Michael; Goodnow, Jacqueline J. – Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 1977
Sixth graders with Australian parents and sixth graders with Greek immigrant parents were given three tasks: memory for a set of 24 pictures, a buttonboard task, and 20 questions. "The results point to the importance of specific strategies on problem-solving tasks and to the importance, in cross-cultural comparisons, of shared understandings…

Hill, Roger B. – Journal of Technology Education, 1997
The Observation Procedure for Technology Education Mental Processes, a computerized assessment tool, was based on duration and frequency of mental processes needed for problem solving. Videotapes of students completing problem-solving activities were used to identify the processes. Interrater reliability tests validated the program. (SK)

Sebrechts, Marc M.; And Others – Cognition and Instruction, 1996
Examined relations between algebraic word-problem attributes and students' strategies, errors, and problem difficulty. Found that constructed responses capture strategy formulation and high-level planning--as do traditional measures of quantitative reasoning--but are more sensitive to individual problem characteristics and procedural errors that…
