Sweller, John – 1999
This book details the findings from a research team that used cognitive principles and a large range of experiments to devise a variety of instructional designs. Their recommendations are based on 20 years of objective, published research. Although the program focused on technical subjects, the findings can easily be applied to a range of…

Wolters, Miriam A. D. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1983
Work by Dutch and Belgian researchers on arithmetic problems involving addition and subtraction is reviewed, especially word problems. It is an attempt to synthesize the research on the relationship between instruction in the part-whole line diagram and the solution of problems. Both logical and psychological interpretations are discussed. (MNS)

Myers, John T. – Journal of Creative Behavior, 1982
Research on cerebral hemisphericity and lateral dominance is reviewed, and relationships between right and left hemispheric modes of information processing as well as problem solving techniques are discussed. Conclusions focus mainly on need for educators to know information processing differences of the two hemispheres to teach children problem…

Williams, Sharon A.; And Others – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1983
Asked older individuals (N=24) questions regarding which of their cognitive abilities have changed with age. Subjects' reports about memory corresponded with previous research, i.e., memory decreases with increasing age. For problem-solving abilities, subjects' reports did not correspond with research, i.e., abilities increased with age. Factors…

Lee, Seong-Soo – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1982
Tenth-grade students (n=144) received training on one of three processing methods: coding-mapping (simultaneous), coding only, or decision tree (sequential). The induced simultaneous processing strategy worked optimally under rule learning, while the sequential strategy was difficult to induce and/or not optimal for rule-learning operations.…

De Geus, Jan; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1982
Describes Nelson and Mitroff's concept of "Bothsides" thinking and a replication of their experiment to determine whether it is possible to promote this type of thinking in decision-making by using an adequate stimulus and, if so, to find out what an adequate stimulus is. A reference list is included. (JL)

Moser, James M.; Carpenter, Thomas P. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1982
Evidence is presented that many primary-age children are good at solving word problems. The data comes from three years of observation of about 100 pupils from grades one through three. It is noted that instances of total failure were relatively rare. The individual interview method is recommended to teachers. (MP)

Lee, Kil S. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1982
Eight boys and eight girls from a rural elementary school participated in the investigation. Specific heuristics were adopted from Polya; and the students selected represented two substages of Piaget's concrete operational stage. Five hypotheses were generated, based on observed results and the study's theoretical rationale. (MP)
