Chen, Hongwei – College Mathematics Journal, 2009
This note presents another elementary method to evaluate the Fresnel integrals. It is interesting to see that this technique is also strong enough to capture a number of pairs of parameter integrals. The main ingredients of the method are the consideration of some related derivatives and linear differential equations.

Bryan, J. A.; Fennell, B. D. – Physics Education, 2009
Because mathematical formulae and problem solving are such prominent components of most introductory physics courses, many students consider these courses to be nothing more than courses in applied mathematics. As a result, students often do not develop an acceptable understanding of the relationship between mathematics and science and of the role…

Mahlberg, Andrea Raye L. – ProQuest LLC, 2011
This dissertation is a qualitative study of the benefits of a student-initiated apartment theme-housing program at a small private university in the southern United States. This study used in-depth interviews to determine what benefits existed from participation in the theme-housing program, and to determine if the program was beneficial to…

Inprasitha, Maitree – Journal of Science and Mathematics Education in Southeast Asia, 2011
In Thailand, the Center for Research in Mathematics Education (CRME) has been implementing Japanese Lesson Study (LS) since 2002. An adaptive feature of this implementation was the incorporation of four phases of the Open Approach as a teaching approach within the three steps of the LS process. Four phases of this open approach are: 1) Posing…

Problem Analysis: Examining the Selection and Evaluation of Data during Problem-Solving Consultation
Newell, Markeda L.; Newell, Terrance S. – Psychology in the Schools, 2011
The purpose of this study was to analyze how school psychologists engaged in problem analysis during problem-solving consultation. Five aspects of the problem analysis process were examined: 1) the types of questions participants asked during problem identification, 2) the types of data participants requested, 3) the frequency of requests for each…

Houssart, Jenny; Evens, Hilary – International Journal of Research & Method in Education, 2011
This article explores theoretical and methodological issues associated with task-based interviews conducted with pairs of children. We explore different approaches to interviews from sociological, psychological and subject-based perspectives. Our interviews, concerning mathematical questions and carried out with pairs of 10 and 11-year-olds, are…

Greene, Ross W. – Phi Delta Kappan, 2011
What we're thinking about behaviorally challenging students and what we're doing to them requires a fresh look. When schools believe that parental discipline explains a child's misbehavior, educators are less likely to consider different explanations for the misbehavior and the full range of interventions that could be implemented at school. And…

Galway, Tanya M.; Metsala, Jamie L. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2011
The current study examined social cognitive skills in children with nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD) compared to normally achieving (NA) children. The relation between social cognitive skills and psychosocial adjustment was also investigated. There were no group differences on children's ability to represent orally presented social vignettes.…

Wepner, Shelley B.; Wilhite, Stephen C.; D'Onofrio, Antonia – Perspectives: Policy and Practice in Higher Education, 2011
The purpose of this paper is to describe how vignettes can be used during an institution's interview process for an education dean. Education deans are confronted with personnel, programmatic, student, and organisational dilemmas on a daily basis. The fundamental responsibilities of the position require education deans to have a strong sense of…

Mannamaa, Mairi; Kikas, Eve; Peets, Katlin; Palu, Anu – Educational Psychology, 2012
Math achievement is not a unidimensional construct but includes different skills that require different cognitive abilities. The focus of this study was to examine associations between a number of cognitive abilities and three domains of math skills (knowing, applying and problem solving) simultaneously in a multivariate framework. Participants…

Lajoie, Susanne P. – Technology, Instruction, Cognition and Learning, 2010
A primary driver for pursuing the development of technology based adaptive tutoring is an attempt to replicate the effects of one-to-one tutoring with human tutors (Bloom, 1984). This paper situates the discussion of adaptive tutoring in the context of a theory-driven approach to the design of specific cognitive tools. Different methods exist to…

Seal, Kala Chand; Przasnyski, Zbigniew H.; Leon, Linda A. – Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, 2010
Do students learn to model OR/MS problems better by using computer-based interactive tutorials and, if so, does increased interactivity in the tutorials lead to better learning? In order to determine the effect of different levels of interactivity on student learning, we used screen capture technology to design interactive support materials for…

Joerding, Wayne – Journal of Economic Education, 2010
In this article, the author describes the pedagogical benefits of giving students individually unique homework exercises from an exercise template. Evidence from a test of this approach shows statistically significant improvements in subsequent exam performance by students receiving unique problems compared with students who received traditional…

Lingefjard, Thomas; Meier, Stephanie – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 2010
The work in the Comenius Network project Developing Quality in Mathematics Education II (DQME II) has a main focus on development and evaluation of modelling tasks. One reason is the gap between what mathematical modelling is and what is taught in mathematical classrooms. This article deals with one modelling task and focuses on how two teachers…

Englard, Lisa – Teaching Children Mathematics, 2010
In a 1981 diagnostic test, the Ministry of Education in Singapore found its country facing a challenge: Only 46 percent of students in grades 2-4 could solve word problems that were presented without such key words as "altogether" or "left." Yet today, according to results from the Trends in International Mathematics and…
